Usu ally the book is popular and is selling won derfully well because it was written by a man who Dr. Alvarez knew almost no medicine. This left him free to promise his readers all sorts of lovely things that no sensible or hon est doctor would think of pro mising. Book publishers tell me that some of these books were largely "ghosted," that is, written by a "hack-writer" for a fee. People write to find out if I know about the layman's or the crackpot's book, and why am I not boosting it in this column. They say, "Don't you know that arthritis can be cured with a diet? Or, "Don't you know that most diseases are due to a low blood sugar?" Yes; people have sent me cop ies of these books, but I am not impressed. When I want to learn something about a subject I like to read books written by recognized experts -men who, perhaps, have spent a life-time studying the subject. Prolapse of the gastric Mucosa Every so often, while x-raying the stomach, one will note that the inner lining of this organ projects slightly through the pylorus (valve at the lower end of the stomach) and into the duodenum (the first inch of bowel). I have been seeing people with such a prolapse of the gastric mu cosa ever since 1912, when I got my first big x-ray mach ine from Vienna, and because I never could be sure that these persons had any con stant type of distress, or per haps any distress at all, I nev er paid any attention to it.
