Bill To License Business Outside Cities Approved Salem LTD A "bill to per mit mi intv courts and county commissioners to license and latp business, outside the limits of incorporated cities passed the Senate vv eanesaay, 16-13. Thp measure once lost in the Senate and then was re vived. Prnnonents claim it will give counties control of busi ness outside cities and regu late what kind of business may be in certain areas. Op ponents objected that it was a revenue - raising measure and discriminatory against cities. Salary Bill Iniroduced A bill increasing the salary of members of the Legislature from' the present $600 a year to $700 a year with the privilege of advance drawing of the second year's salary during the regular legislative session was introduced. Sen. R. F. Chapman (D Coos Bay) author of the bill. Another resolution which will go to a vote of the peo ple at the 1960 general elec- inn i f adnnted bv the Legis lature calls for an annual salarv of S1.200 in place of S600. This bill has been adopted by the Senate and is now being considered by the House. Resolution Amended Senate Joint Resolution 25 providing for an increase in the salaries of state legisla tors was amended in the House ' State and Federal Affairs Committee to reduce the figure from $1,500 to $1,200 a year. The Committee added a clause which would provide $10 a day expense money to legislators wniie iney are m ;pinn at Salem. Rep. Norman Howard (D Portland), chairman, said the majority of the states in the nation pay higher salaries xo legislators than is proposed in this resolution and also pay their solons expense money. . Will Go To Vote If adopted by the House and Senate, the ersolution will go to a vote of the people at the November, 1960, general election. A bill to prohibit motor boating on Spring creek in Klamath county was passed. Sen. Harry Boivin (D-Klam-ath Falls) said the water there was so cold there was no swimming and. that there was danger of motorboats ov erturning smaller boats and throwing passengers into the creek. A bill which would make a bear a game animal was in troduced. The bill is spon sored by Sen. Harry Boivin (D-Klamath Falls) and others. Members of the House vot ed 41-16 to increase their terms of office from two years in -frvnr vears. The issue now goes to the Senate. It would require a vote of the people at the next general election. Students Elected To OSC Offices Corvallis - Four students from the Medford area have been elected officers in their living groups at Oregon State college. They are Edward D Nienow and David L. Gifford of Medford, Grace A. Gail of Gold Hill, and Sally J. Elden of Central Point. Nienow is new house man ager of Hawthorne Manor, one of six campus men s coopera tive houses. A sophomore in business and technology, his home address is 2817 Howard ave. Gifford is new corre sponding secretary of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He is a freshman in science. He lives at 2216 Ruhl Way. Miss Gail is new treasurer of Azalea House, one of six campus women's cooperative houses. She is a sophomore in the school of education. Oregon passenger traffic today in support of a request before the Public Util ity Commission for a 10 per cent rate increase. He said costs of operation have continued to increase and that present fares do not yield enough revenue to de fray current operating costs. The increase asked is the first since 1956.
