Mcdfotrf, Oraon, Sunday, Mireh 29, 1959 ONCE - A - MONTH Buried Treasure fa Rib-Type Glass Highly Prized for Simplicity One of the earliest designs to appear in pressed glass is what is known as the rib type. In its basic form it consists of nothing more than vertical flutings, giving much the ef fect of a bank of organ pipes. Soon after this design ap peared, in the first half of the 1850s, manufacturers began to elaborate upon it. Usually, the elaboration consisted of add ing a flower motif of some kind that lay against the back ground of vertical ribbing. Some of these newer types were done in excellent taste, such as the ribbed grape and bell-flower patterns and have fully as great value as that of the earliest plain ribbed glass. As a general rule, however, piece for piece, the early plain ribbed glass brings a higher price. An egg cup that I saw re cently is a case in point. It was one of the covered type and was made of a deep ame-j thyst colored glass that had a j rich glow. The pattern con sisted of nothing but a simple ribbing on both the outer sur face of the cup and on the cover. The owner, who had seven other egg cups in the identical design, but of different sizes, four of them being in differ ent colors, had paid $50 for it, better than twice the price of any other in the collection. The quality of the color justi fied it. On the average, egg cups of this design generally bring from $15 to $25. A word 'of warning, how ever. Because of its simplicity and age, the rib design has been widely reproduced. While many of the reproduc tions are so cheap in execu tion as to be immediately ap parent, others are so well done they would deceive any one but an expert. Series 1928-E Bills Mar Bring Rewards to Holder At this moment you may have much more money in your billfold than you realize. It all depends on how rare some of the bills are. If you happen to have any of the $1 silver certificates and you probably have-you will be around $100 richer if one of them falls in the right part of the series of 1928-E. The fact that the big, old fashioned bills were not re placed by the small, modern ones until 1929 has nothing to do with the series 1928-E, some of which were printed as late as the mid-1930s. That, or any other series number, ap pears on all small bills and is almost certain to be found on the obverse side, just to the right of the lower part of Washington's portrait, and a little to the lower left of the blue seal. Now then, if your $1 silver certificate of the 1928-E series is one of the most valuable kind, it will have the signa tures of Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr on the right and that of Treasurer of the United States William A. Julian on the left of the picture of Washington. In that case, the $1 bill will have a collector's value of around $100. jiven more if it happens -to be in excellent condition and have an "R" or an "S" surcharged in red on the face of the note as a guide in a study of nor.e circulation. But the 1928-E series is by no means the only one to look for among the small bills. Probably every series has its outstanding values, and if you have one of the bills in the 1928-C or 1928-D series, it may still pay off with a profit. If the note is a 1928-C se ries and has the signatures of Secretary of the Treasury William H. Wodin, Morgen thau's predecessor in 1933-34, and of U.S. Treasurer Woods, the value is around $35. The 1928-D series, with the signatures of Julian and Woodlin, have a value of about $30. Charm of Early-American Towns Caught by Bennett Prints of American cities made during the early or mid 1800s generally command a fair price regardless of who made them, but any tint were painted or engraved by W. J. Bennett are pretty sure to be among the more valuable. William James Bennett came to the United States in 1826, when he was 39 and after he had already won a substantial reputation in Eng land as a water colorist, land scape painter, etcher and en graver. His work had been exhibited in London several times beginning in 1808, shortly after his 21st birth day. Though he continued to paint landscapes, he was quick to see that there was a market for pictures of the swiftly growing cities of America. Except for prints, there was no other way at the time by which people could have a picture in their homes of their cities as they knew and had known them. And while it may not seem likely today, the rate of change was just about as great then as now. Accordingly, Bennett made several visits to different ci ties producing prints that are among our best records of what life in urban America at that time was. One that I saw recently may be taken as typical. It was of Detroit, Mich., made in 1836 from a sketch by one of Bennett's assistants, one Frederick Green. On the print the view was described as "taken from the Canadian shore near the Ferry." Beneath the center of the picture, on the margin, was the name of the publisher, Henry L. Megary, New York. The point is an important one, because that is what dis tinguishes the first edition of the print which is the most valuable. .. In the second edition, Me gary's name has been re placed by that of John Levi son, of 341 Broadway, N.Y. While the second edition has a worthwhile value, too, it is not so great as that of the first which has brought from $500 to $1000 in recent years. Prices paid for Ben nett's prints of other cities, such as Troy, Boston and so on, are in much the same price range.
