JU JL f 3J Students Oufgain Teacher Number Washington MUPD- The num ber of elementary and second ary school students rose by 60 per cent between 1950 and 1958 while the number of teachers increased only 45 per cent. The Census Bureau said a survey it made last October showed there were 1,600,000 teachers in public and private schools below college level and about 39,500,000 students. College enrollments boosted the total number of students to 43,000,000. The bureau also reported Thursday night that about 80 per cent, or 1,300,000 of the teachers below college level taught in public schools. Of these, 926,000 were women, two thirds of them 35 years old or more. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Friday, March 27, 1959 5 In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS President Eisenhower tells his news conference he would be inclined to agree on" a se ries of "summit" meetings if he thought they could be ar ranged "under conditions which would permit useful discussions and lead to bene ficial effects for the United States." By "conditions," he meant a previous foreign min isters meeting. He then added that if any one thinks he has agreed to an AUTOMATIC trip to the summit, that is different from what he meant. THAT' ISN'T new. It is in line with President Eisenhower's position from the beginning. It's language Russia can un derstand. A QUESTION: Why is Mr. K so set on a "summit" meeting? The probable answer is that he regards a summit meeting as a propaganda battle and he doubtless feels reasonably cer tain of his ability to win a propaganda battle. Why does h& think that? Well, in a propaganda bat tle, a liar nearly always en joys a considerable advantage over a truthful man. One of the basic tenets of communism is that lying isn't a sin if it gets you what you want. A NOTHER question: Why is Ike skeptical of a summit meeting? The answer is simple: He is afraid that OUR SIDE, Ustening to the propaganda that will be peddled at such a meeting, will build up hopes that are TOO HIGH and will sink into a period of depressed thinking when these hopes are not realized. His fears are NOT groundless. Porter Testifies On Federal Aid To Education Washington Congressman Charles O. Porter (D-Ore.) this week testified before the Edu cation and Labor subcommit tee considering legis 1 a t i o n calling for federal aid to edu cation. Porter spoke on behalf of "the need for legislation at the federal level to help dis tricts and states meet the need for more classrooms and more teachers." Porter told the Subcommit tee on General Education, headed by Rep. Cleveland Bailey (D-W.Va.) that he had received scores of letters from residents of the Fourth Con gressional District of Oregon. He said the vast majority favored some form of federal aid and that specifically the writers favored the Murray Metcalf bill. Felt Long Overdue Porter said he felt that leg islation in the field "is nec essary and long overdue." He said some residents of his dis trict felt that such legislation "improperly enacted- could open the door to federal con trol." Porter bluntly told the subcommittee that he believ ed it was part of the work of the committee considering the legislation Jo make sure this does not occur. He said he hoped a bill could be reported this year which would be the first of a series of steps to help the United States face more capa bly the growing challenge of the expanding Com m u n i s t world. Porter said: "There are urg ent and immediate demands facing education today. These demands can be glossed over or even set aside for another year, but each time this oc curs the enemies of the West ern World have drawn the noose a little tignter arouna our throats."- Monorel Dog Struck, Killed by Vehicle A whitevnongrel dog was struck and killed by a motor vehicle Thursday morning on Barnett rd. between Edee mont st. and Black Oak dr., Medford Dolice reported. Mary Ellen Allen, post of fice box 672, Jacksonville, told police the dog was lying in the center of the road as she drove west. She stated she drove over the dog, straddling it between the wheels of her vehicle, but it rose as the vehicle passed over and was struck.- According to police records, this is the 11th dog to be struck by an automobile on Medford streets so far this year.
