Bob Duden Keeps Cross Lead In Pro-Amateur; Ed Hogan's Card Low On Ashland Course Bob Duden, Oswego, main tained his leadership yester day in the Oregon division Professional Golfers associa tion traveling pro-amateur tumey being played over three southern Oregon links. Eddie H o g a n, Riverside, Portland, carded the best gross score of the day and Charles Sullivan, Ashland pro, and Earnest Pearson, Med ford amateur, topped the pro am best ball rivalry. Linksmen concluded their three-day stint today at Rogue Valley Country club after competing yesterday at Oak Knoll club, Ashland, and Sun day at Roseburg Country club. Duden stroked a 72 at Ash land yesterday, adding it to his Sunday count of 68 for a two-day professional low gross of 140. Hogan took over second position alone among the pros by stroking a 70. Tornado Baseballers Bill Ashland Onener Dennis Barr and Herb Wheeler will handle the pitch ing duties Wednesday when the Medford High baseball team opens its season. The Black Tornado plays a non-league afternoon game at Ashland. Coach John Kovenz said that he plans to take a squad of 14 players to the Lithia city. Probable starters are Bob Pond, catcher; Bob Quin ney, first base; Ray Kono pasek, second base; Dick Ragsdale, shortstop; Bob Steele, third base; Frank Peterson, left field; Wayne Thompson, center field, and Mike Parsons, right field. Others who are to make the trip are Jerry Fields and Tom Turpin, outfielders, and Jim Barry. and Ken Jensen, catchers and outfielders. Johnson and McKinnls Coach Bill Leybold re ported that Bob Johnson and Alan McKinnis will divide Ashland pitching chores with Phil Tucker on the receiving end of the battery. Other let termen starting will be Har ley Dickerson, third base; Mike Brewer, left field, and Pete Stemple, center field. Filling out the infield will be Steve Harris, first base; Brad Gettling, second base, and Jim Stewart, shortstop. Dave Jackson is to be in right field. Stewart, whom Leybold says is "looking pretty good,' gap made by the transfer of stellar Billy Maurer to North Salem high. A seventh Ashland letter- man, Dennis Johnson, third base and shortstop, has been sidelined by surgery and will be missing three weeks. Stemple is also a pitcher and other moundsmen are Bob Hardy and Duane Nel son. Galen Roberson is a catcher on the squad, Paul Alley an outfielder, and Larry Schmaltz an in infielder. Title Bout Postponed Los Angeles -UPD The ban tamweight title bout between champion Alphonse Halimi of France and Joe Becerra of Mexico has been set back from - May 6 to June 3 at Wrigley field. The amateurs were Dom Provost Jr., Ashland, and Bill Tallis, an Oak Knoll player. Among the pros Bill Egg ers, Rose City, Portland, and Harvey Hixson, Laurelwood, Eugene, banged out 72s along with Duden yesterday while Sullivan had a 73 along with Oldfield. Shooting 74s along with Porterfield were Bob Gasper, Cottage Grove, Ron Caperna, Medford, and Har old West, Longview, Wash. Flink and Langley were the low gross amateurs at Ash land with 76s while Alan Holmes, Medford, had a 77 and DeRoss Kincade, Cottage Grove, a 78. SOC Looks Powerful In Baseball Ashland - Eleven lettermen are in the ranks of the South ern Oregon college 1959 bas ball squad as it prepars for an opening doubleheader against Shasta Junior college in Redding, Calif., on March 31. The Raiders are the defend ing champions in the Oregon Collegiate conference and with the returnees must be count ed as a major threat to take the crown for -a second year. Coach Ted Schopf has three of his five 1958 pitchers back. They are Dave D'Olivo, who was the top hurler with a 7-3 record, starter Kermit McLe more, and reliefer Dale Wal ter. Larry Maurer is back at first base. He was the leading hitter for the men of SOC last year with a .419 mark. Phil Sword and Jim Mc Abee again will be ready for duty behind the plate and in the outfield. King Back LeRoy King, a starter last year and big run producer, is back in the outfield along with reserves Ray Weinhold and infielder - outfielder El don Francis. In the infield regulars Chuck Nevi at third and Jim Dietz at second base are on hand but there is a wide open position at shortstop because of the loss of Willie Jones. Gordie Carrigan, the basket ball whiz, and freshman Jack Kopaz from Lakeview appear to be leading candidates for the spot. SOC had an 11-1 OCC rec ord and a noverall 18-6 mark in 1958. The Raiders also have games scheduled with Hum boldt State and Chico State in preparation for 1959 league campaign. At least one and possibly two games are also set up with the University of Oregon in Eugene. Ted Williams Gets Shoulder Treatment SPORTS PARADE OSCAR FRALEY , Sport Writer United Press Scottsdale, Ariz.- (IIPD -Bos ton slugger Ted Williams was undergoing treatment today from Red Sox trainer Jack Fadden for a painful catch in his shoulder. Williams had been suffer ing for about a week from the shoulder trouble but made an effort to play Sunday in a game at Tucson until the pain became too great and Mana ger Mike Higgins benched him. "I can't do anything until this clears up," Williams said as he underwent treatment. "It never bothered me much until Sunday in Tucson." Williams was but one of many on the Red Sox hospital list which included the league's most valuable player, Jackie Jensen, recovering from the removal of an im pacted wisdom tooth; second baseman Pete Runnels, with a throat infection; third base man Frank Malzone, with a sore arm; catcher Eddie Sa dowski, suffering from an eye infection, and first base man Vic Wertz, incapacitated with a pulled groin muscle. Trainer Fadden said that none of the injured or inca pacitated could be considered seriously hurt and all should recover- completely in a few days. OSC Baseball Team Sets Game Corvallis (UPD Oregon State's 1959 baseball team makes its debut this week in a three-day pre-season tourna ment at Lewiston, Idaho, also involving Washington State, Idaho and Montana.
