Weekly Visitors Pay Homage to Pope John By PHIL NEWSOM TJPI Foreign News Ediior Vatican City-OIi-A wave of sound rolls through the Vati can's Hall of Benedictions. An American woman's mink cape slips from her shoulders to the floor as she leans far forward for a better view. A nun dabs at her eyes with a handkerchief. The hand-clapping which had begun far back in the vast hall, now rolls forward, the wave advancing with the ges tatorial chair borne by eight sturdy bearers. Ahead are the noble guards, with glittering gold helmets. At the side are the pala tine guards, gold epaulets on their shoulders and gold trim on their uniforms. Along the route are the chamberlains in crimson tail coats and knee breeches. Near the papal throne, the Swiss pikeman draw stiffly to attention. Different from Predecessor This is homage to a portly man of 77 elected to assume the mantle previously worn by Pope Pius XII, This man is Pope John XXIII, new spiritual leader of the world's 500 million Cath olics, as different from his predecessor as his personal bulk contrasts with thin, es thetic Pius XII. This is a man of seeming ly boundless energy, impa tient with tradition, possessed of limitless curiosity which al Benediction Scheduled for Sunday In accordance with ancient tradition of the church, the benediction of the palms will take place at the 8 a.m. Holy Eucharist at St, Mark's Epis copal church Sunday. The palms, especially im ported from the Holy Land for the purpose, will adorn the altar, be carried by the choir in procession, and the re mainder will be fashioned into small crosses by members of the Altar Guild, and be dis tributed to worshippers at all Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week. According to traditional practice these crosses are re tained until Ash Wednesday of the following year when they are burned at the start of another lenten season. Assistant to Speak The Rev. These services will be held in conjunction with the cur rent evangelistic campaign which will continue through Zaster. XXIII ready has startled more than one Vatican attendant. From the papal throne, he welcomes the more than 7,000 Romans and pilgrims jamming the Hall of Benedictions to standing room only. It is the regular weekly audience. As he begins his welcome, his hands rest relaxed against the armrest of the throne. But as he continues, he ges tures and finaly the gestures are continuous and vigorous. His voice booms through the two microphones before him and he half rises to make his point. His message in Italian and French is a simple one of faith, but Pope John XXIII pours energy into every act. Already he has confounded the prophets who had predict ed he would be an "interim" pope, content to consolidate rather than to institute new policies such as his predeces sors who plunged the church into international diplomacy. One announcement already portends far-reaching conse quences for the Roman Cath olic church. That was his call for. an ecumenical congress, one of the highest level of all church councils whose decrees by church law are infallible. It will aim at bringing back to the Roman Catholic church some 50 million Eastern Cath olics not now under Vatican jurisdiction. of Palms sistant at St. Mark's, will preach at both 9:30 and 11 ajn. services, with musical selections by the choir, under the direction of John Drys- dale. His develop ment of the cell examination for uterine cancer has made it possible to diagnose can cer of the uterus, or womb, in very early stages. Cancer in this site strikes about 33,000 women a year and claims the lives of almost half of them. The tragic fact is that many of these lives are lost needless ly, for cancer of the uterus is highly curable. If every woman had her doctor per form this simple, painless procedure once a year, thou sands of those who have cancer of the uterus could be saved. Don't gamble with your life! See your physician about a cell examination for uterine cancer soon.
