Five high school seniors in Jackson and Douglas counties have been awarded $300 scholarships by the Elk Lum ber company to Willamette university and Lewis and Clark college. Scholarship recipients are Miss Marsha Minchall, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin J Minshall, 608 Old Sterling rd., Jacksonville; Miss Jane Yaple, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Howard Yaple, 715 Elkader st., Ashland; Jim Fontaine, son of Mr. and Mrs. "William E. Fontaine, 516 Bel mont ave., Medford; Miss Sharon Lyons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Eugene Lyons, Roseburg; and Miss Janet Kilbourn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Whitman Kilbourn, route 2, box 222, Central Point. Miss Minshall attends Med ford High school where she is a member of Torch Honor society, International Rela tions League, a commissioner of membership of the History, Economics, Civics associa tion; and the band. Slats Conference She has attended the state conference of IRL for two years and is an active mem ber of First Methodist church, Medford. Miss Yaple is a student at Ashland High school where she has participated in the activities of Future Teachers of America, Pep club, Ski Club, and Girls Athletic as sociation. During her high school training she has been active in debate and is current state debate champion. She took part in the United Nations Pilgrimage to New York and is student body secretary on the Ashland High school student council and is a member of National Honor society. She is active in the Trinity Episcopal church, Ashland. During the past four summers she has been a swimming instructor for the city of Ashland. Fontaine, Miss Lyons and Miss Kilbourn were awarded scholarships to Lewis and Clark college, Portland. Club President Jim Fontaine is president of the Latin club at Medford High school and is a member of the football team, orches tra, IRL, Science club, Order of M, and is currently serving as chairman of the advisory committee to the student council. He is an active mem ber of the First Presbyterian church, Medford. Miss Kilbourn is a senior at Crater High school, where . she is a member of the band, serving as both secretary and treasurer; Future Homemak ers of America and Girls League. She is also a member of Torch Honor society, and is a representative to the student council. She is presi dent of the senior Girl Scouts and has served eight terms as an officer in International Or der of Job's Daughters. She is an active member of Central Point First Presby terian church where she is pianist for the church school. Speech Activities Miss Lyons has participated in speech activities in both debate and oratory at Rose burg High school and has served as copy editor on the annual staff. She is a council representative on the Girls Leaguend has held several offices on the student council. She is a member of the Na tional Honor Society and has been named girl-of-the-month at the school. "She is an active member of Roseburg First Presbyter ian church and served as a delegate to the national meet ing of Presbyterian Youth in 1957. Last summer she served as a worker in a work camp at Donaldina Cameron House, San Frncisco, a Presbyterian mission project. She is also active in International Order of Job's Daughters of which she is current bethel queen.. Additional scholarships to the two colleges are avail able, members of the Elk Lumber company scholarship committee have announced. Seniors interested in obtain ing more information may contact any of the committee members. Members of the committee include Riley Cook, chair man; Frank Van Dyke, Dr. George G. Roseberry, Dr. D. Kirkland West, and Mrs. George Flanagan, secretary. POLICE REPORTER DIES Los Angeles - (UPD - James Shambra, 50, veteran police reporter for the Los Angeles Herald Express, died Wednes day after suffering a heart attack. Boy Questioned by Sheriff's Deputies A nine-year-old boy who shot a dog with his bow and arrow was released to his parents following the incident Tuesday, according to sher iffs deputies. The boy was charged with piercing a cocker spaniel in the ribs with a steel-tipped hunting arrow. The dog's own er is Ira Bruce Snelson, route 1, box 271, Talent, the dep uties said. Two juveniles, 15 and 16 years old, have been released to their parents after being apprehended for breaking into a cabin on Roxy Ann. deDuties said today. The boys were released to their parents after returnins a radio they had taken from the cabin. The youngsters said they had taken the radio for their school Centennial dis play.
