(UPD- The second chapter of the NAIA coast-to-coast basketball tour nament unfolded today with favored Tennessee A&I State making its debut against Ne braska Wesleyan. Eight first - round games were on tap just like open ing day Monday. The Tennessee crew, which has won the NAIA champion ship twice before including last year, will go against the Nebraskans at 5 p.m. (p.s.t). Today's action began at 8:30 a.m. with New Britain, Conn, and Westminster of Pennsyl vania fighting it out. Other first round results Monday and Monday night saw several other seeded teams come through with vic tories all except seventh ranked Pikeville College of Kentucky. The Kentuckians lost to un heralded Arkansas State Teachers 70-67. The 'Skins have lost three of their high draft choices-Jim Wood of Oklahoma State and quarter back Joe Kapp of California to Calgary and quarterback Don Allard of Boston College to Ottawa. GETS FOOTBALL TV New York-flJPD-The NCAA has awarded television rights to its 1959 football program to the National Broadcasting company for the fifth straight year. New Mexico State won the Border conference champion ship by trouncing Arizona State TJ., 78-57, in a playoff at Las Cruces, N.M. Joe Kel- ley. paced the win with 21 points as New Mexico State emerged the final top dog in what had been a triple tie for the league crown. New Mex ico State meets Idaho State in an NCAA first-rounder Wed nesday at Las Cruces, where New Mexico State now has won 24 straight games. So now the NCAA major college competition is set to roll. The eight regional winners in the NCAA small - college tournament will compete in quarter-final games at Evans ville, Ind., Wednesday. Lee Ragsdale To Be Delegate Portland-Lee V. Ragsdale, Medford, and Miss Margaret Dodson, Portland, have been named Oregon delegates to the national convention of the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Appointments were an nounced by Mrs. Betty J. Owen, Salem, president of the Oregon association. The con vention will be held March 29 through April 2 at Port land. Ragsdale is supervisor of health and physical educa tion for Medford schools and Miss Dodson physical educa tion instructor at Portland State college. TITLE FIGHT Portland - (UPD - Promoter Tommy Moyer indicated over the week end that he has just about completed negotiations for a welterweight title fight here this summer between champion Don Jordan and Denny Moyer, should Jordan defeat Virgil Akins April 3. Portland Footballer Receives 90 Days Portland-UPD-Raye S. Ren fro, all-state football player from Jefferson high school last fall, Monday was sen tenced to 90 days in ail on a petty larceny charge aris ing from theft of two tires from a service station last Saturday. The charge was reduced from grand larceny. Munici pal Judge J. J. Murchison who imposed the jail term said he would ask the parole office to look into the case. Harman On All Coast Cage Team San Francisco (UPD Doug Smart, University of Wash ington's talented all-around performer, heads the cast for the 1959 United Press Inter national All-West Coast bas ketball team announced today. Smart, one of the top scor ers in the West and the No. 1 rebound artist in the Pacific Coast Conference, was named "Player of the Year" in a close ballot with UCLA's Walt Tor rence. Pete Newell, who pi loted University of Califor nia's Golden Bears to the PCC championship, easily was picked as "Coach of the Year." Bears, Gaels Shut Out Surprisingly enough, the voters failed to name a single man to the first team from the PCC title-winning squad and St. Mary's West Coast Athletic Conference champions. Along with Smart and Tor rence on the first team were Lee Harman, Oregon State; Charley Brown of Seattle U. and Paul Neuman, Stanford. California clicked for three men on the six-man second team, placing Darrall Imhoff, Al Buch and Dennis Fitzpat rick. Ballots were counted on a basis of 10 points for the first team and five for the second. Imhoff, Tom Meschery of St. Mary's and Fitzpatrick all got as many or more first-place votes than Neumann, but the Stanford guard was named on nearly every ballot for a first or second-place berth. John Werhas, Southern Cal ifornia's fine performer, bare ly missed making the second team as he was nosed out by Bruno Boin of Washington and Dave Klurman of College of Pacific. Top Scorers Dominate The all-around strength of the first team is shown in the season's averages. Torrance leads in the Pacific Coast con ference in scoring; Smart was second, Neumann third, Har man fifth. Brown was the big gun in another fine season for the Seattle Chieftains. Smart was f ar-and-away the best rebound man in the West; and he led the PCC in field goal percentage. The fireworks aren't as vio lent as they were tjie first time around. But this time there's almost as much hootin' and hollerin' and excitement as well as a great deal more shootin'. This uprising is concerned with basketball, a sport in which Dixie at last has taken its place as a section which bows to none when it comes to overall enthusiasm and ability. "You can believe that," Mc Guire says in a voice which, after seven years in the South, is a mulligan stew mix ture between a pastrami sand wich and hominy grts. "Bas ketball in the South, after years of being 'on its way,' has definitely arrived. On an overall basis it stacks up with any in the country and we can even give those damn yankees from Indiana a few lessons in enthusiasm." Resemble Revival Meeting The descendants of the hot heads who fired on Fort Sumter haven't lost a shade Giants Meet Red Sox Phoenix, Ariz.-(UPD-The San Francisco Giants versus the San Francisco Seals? Almost, but not quite. It will be the Giants against the Boston Red Sox here to day, but the latter club will include 11 players who were on the pennant-winning San Francisco Seals team that Boston sponsored in the Bay city's last year in the Pacific Coast league. Among the former Seals are Outfielders Marty Keough and Bill Renna, Catcher Hay wood Sullivan and Pitchers Ted Bowsfield and Jerry Ca sales. The game, in which Ted Williams may or may not make an appearance, could throw the Cactus league lead ership into a two-way dead lock should the Giants win. The Beantowners have taken the measure of the Chicago Cubs twice, while the Giants have split with Cleveland in their two starts. Williams, who has still to make his first exhibition game appearance of the year, may turn up in a pinch-hitting role. "They used to concede to teams like Kentucky and North Carolina State," Mc Guire illustrated. "Well, to day our Atlantic Coast Con ference is the toughest in the country and basketball in the South rates with any. Remem ber, it wasn't until the last decade that Georgia Tech gave its first basketball schol arship; Mississippi State has taken the Southeastern title away from Kentucky with Auburn right up there, and teams like Wake Forest and Duke have come a long way." TITLE BOUT SITE New York -(UPD -Promoter Bill Rosensohn was expected to announce at a press confer ence today that the Floyd Patterson-Ingemar Johansson heavyweight title fight will be staged at New York's Yankee Stadium, possibly on June 23. TITLE FIGHT EVEN Los Angeles-(UPD-The March 18 featherweight title bout here between champion Ho gan (Kid) Bassey of Nigeria and Davey Moore of Spring field, Ohio, is causing such heavy wagering by supporters of each that oddsmakers quoted "even money" on the fight today. North Salem held down second place with Jefferson of Portland fourth and Marshfield fifth. In Class A-2, Myrtle Creek lopped the poll with Coquille second. Wyoming Coach Resigns Job Cheyenne, Wyo.-(UPD -University of Wyoming basket ball coach Everett F. Shelton bowed out Monday night aft er 20 years, eight Skyline conference crowns, a national championship and the close of his worst season. Shelton announced his res ignation at a Cheyenne Quar terback club banquet in honor of the 1959 Cowboy squad, which dropped 22 contests and won but four. He said he was accepting another coaching position which was "less demanding." He did not name the team he would be leading. Shelton, 60, won 329 games in his two decades at Laramie, dropping 199. His teams piled up eight Skyline champion ships, and the 1943 squad won the NCAA title. The last con ference title was won by the Cowboys just last year.
