Terry said she had taken a hike on the seven-mile Boy Scout trail near Gold Hill to take pictures of snow scenes and had paused to aim her camera when she heard a deep growl behind her. She said she glanced over her shoulder and saw a cou gar lying about eight feet from her in the shelter of some underbrush. The snarl ing animal had its teeth bared, Terry said, but made no mo tion to charge. Nearly Frozen Trying to act nonchalant, while nearly frozen wth fright, Terry said she con tinued to whistle, aimed her camera at the scene she in tended to take and snapped the shutter. Then, still trying to show unconcern, she walk ed slowly to a point some dis tance from the animal before breaking into a run. She told her grandmother, Mrs. Har riet Elliott, that she probably broke all speed records for that two or three mile section of trail back to town. Terry added that not click ing the camera at the cougar itself, at that short range, might have saved her from being attacked, although she admits a portrait of the ani mal would have been undis putable evidence to back up her story. The cougar has been known to charge human beings when cornered. Seen, Heard A resident of Gold Hill re ported seeing a cougar recent ly on the hill behind the Ideal cement plant and a woman said she heard what she thought was the cry of a cougar early one morning, which seemed to come from the hill north east of town. Jackson SP 2-5904 New Loading Tong Invented in Lebanon Logging equipment dealers of southern Oregon are ex pected to start handling a new type log-loading tong in about 30 days, R. F. Jenkins, Lebanon, inventor of the tongs, has announced. The "Doroy" tongs, Jen kins said, has the same func tion as other tongs, but differ in that they are operated by the loader operator rather than a second man specifically for that purpose, thus elimin ating a safety hazard responsi ble for many accidents. Jenkins, who has been in the logging business for 15 years, said the idea for a "safer and faster" loading tong had been worked out over a number of years. Opening and closing the jaws which grip the log is controlled by a single cable while the lift is made by a second cable. All operations are conduct ed from the cab of the loader, Jenkins said. Capaciy of the tong built on an experimental basis is a 42 inch log, he said.
