If you pjpk up a starving dog, and make him prosper ous, he will not bite you. This is the principle difference be tween a dog and a man. We seek your cooperation in ridding our streets, high ways and alleyways of aban doned or stray small animals. The s6lution of this problem is as easy as ABC - "Animal Birth Control." Pet owners should adopt and carry out a sensible pro gram of animal birth control. By this is meant humane neu tering by professional veter inarians of all pets. If you have a dog or cat and can no longer take care of it, or just don't want it around, don't just give it away to the first person, who will take it off your hands. Call the Hu mane society office, NO 4-2406, and we will endeavor to find a good home. We must learn to sympa thize with the animals about us. We must realize that they love life just as we love it, that they suffer just as we suf fer, that they are hurt by harshness and threats as we are hurt by them, that they are influenced by our thoughts as we are influenced by the thoughts of one another, that they love kindly treatment as you and I. A clipping taken from the Los Angeles Times in which Jack Smith was writing under the byline "Smith and Men," stated there are people who like cats and will defend them beyond reason, that these peo ple are psychologically sick. If attachment to these crea tures of nature, or if laboring in their behalf, represents, ac cording to Jack Smith, a neu rotic personality, then I for one along with President Roosevelt, Gen. George Pat ton and many others, am neu rotic. I shall continue to cham pion the rights of dogs and cats and other animials, and if by my efforts I am labeled neurotic, then I shall not dis claim it. One of the hallmarks of the mature mind is its abil ity to comprehend pains and problems other than its own, Man is the only animal which causes others pain without any further object than that of doing so. The other animals never do it oth erwise than to satisfy their hunger or in the heat of con flict. t You sometimes wonder why so-and-so bought a such-and-such dog. The dog and people may have been congenial once, but they definitely are n't now, in fact, they seem un comfortable with each, other, and constantly at odds'. It is plain to see neither the pres ent owner nor the dog will profit from such an unhappy relationship. Every puppy is appealing in some way. Their soft, baby roundness and in nocently questing playfulness makes them irresistible even to people who don't like dogs. Unfortunately, they don't stay that way, puppies do have to grow up, and some dog owners find themselves in the position of some confirm ed apartment dwellers I heard of, who wanted, a small dog. With full assurance that this was a small dog, they were given a "toy terrier," that happened to be a Great Dane puppy that a prankish friend had bred, and wanted to find a good home for: The last I heard, the "toy terrier" had grown to full Dane dimen sions, and was lording it over his doting owners, who had bought a country home with five acres of fenced-in land for him. Not all turn out that well: People are people and dogs are dogs. There is in every animals' eye a dim image of humanity, a f 1 a s h - of strange light through which their life looks Hoffa Quits Plans To Organize Police Philadelphia- (UPD-Teamster President James R.
