Ashland High Drubs Crater Quint 55-31 Ashland Ashland High, whose only other basketball decision of the season was over Crater whacked the Com ets again Friday night. Mar gin in the Southern Oregon conference tussle was 55 to 31. The Grizzlies applied more team desire than that showed by the Comets and they fired with more sharpness from the field and exercised two to 1 control under the backboards. Crater led through much of the first quarter but Ash land caught up at 7-all and was in front 12 to 9 at the end of the stanza. Ashland headed 22 to 11 at the half and 40. to 17 after three per iods. A field goal by Mike King Ashlanders Nip Hornets Two free shot by Danny Lewis in the last minute gave Ashland a 41 to 40 nod over Hedrick of Medford Friday In ninth grade basketball tilt. It was the season finale for the Medford club. Closing out their slate's al so, the- Hedrick eighth beat Ashland 33 to 28 and the Hor net seventh won 24 to 20 over Its Lithian rival. Vowall Tallies 19 Hedrick's ninth was ahead ' 15 to 14 at the quarter of its ruckus. Ashland's Frosh led 26 to 23 at the half but the Hornets were back in the lead 30 to 29 at the third inter mission. Rennie Viwell, Hed rick, was high man with 19 counters while Galen Rober- son counted up 13 for Ash land and Ron Kirsher had 11. In the seventh grade scrap Ashland led 6 to 4 at the quarter and Hedrick 11 to 10 and 20 to 14 at the other per iod stops. Steve Root had nine points for the Hornets and Dean Samuelson six for Ash land. The Hornet seventh had an 8J season record. Of its five losses, two were to MLough lin of Medford and three to Central Point. was the only scoring for Cra ter in the second quarter. There was no counter by eith er team for almost five min utes of the second canto and Crater went around four min utes in the third session with out getting the ball through the net. Johnson Shoots 13 Ashland's Bob Johnson was the t op point getter with 13. Eight each by Bill White and Loyal Higinbotham of Cra ter. White's work under the boards was a Comet high light but the main rebounders of the scuffle were Doug For rest, Jim Bork, and Johnson, all of Ashland. ' The Grizzlies shot .379 from the field while Crater averaged .215. Ashland and Crater now have split in their four league scraps and their respective winsjjver each other are their only ones in the circuit. Members will con vene at 8 p.m. at the Girls Community club, 229 North Bartlett st. The group will continue its discussion of the late opening of trout season on the Rogue river and its tributaries. Both O'Brien and the 18- year-old University of South ern California freshman by way of North Phoenix Ariz, high school surpassed the recognized world's mark for the shot put Friday. But be cause of a rolling infield at Southern Cal., neither effort will be submitted as a record. Second Try. Long made his put in a meet between the SC frosh and Compton College. On his second attempt he pushed the iron ball 63 feet, 4 inches. O'Brien's world mark is 63 feet, 2 inches. O'Brien witnessed the dem onstration of power by Long and immediately changed in to a track suit. After several practice attempts, he got off a put of 63 feet, 6 inches. Official or not, said O'Brien, it was the best throw he had ever made. Cleveland Spills Jeff By United Press International Astoria and North Salem, 1 and 2 in the state as far as prep basketball teams are ranked, continued on their merry winning way Friday night. But the third ranked team, Jefferson of Portland suffer ed its third defeat of the sea son, bowing to Cleveland, and lost a chance to sew up the city title. Astoria had little trouble downing Hillsboro, 76-33 and North Salem walloped Sweet Home, 61-40. Tough Time Klamath Falls, No. 3, had a tough time before getting past Grants Pass, 55-54. Sixth ranked Bend edged Prineville 60-56. Pendleton, No. 5,' and Med ford,. tied for sixth with Bend were idle. St. Helens ran its season record to 20-1. with a 74-61 win over McMinnville. Grant, No. 9, triumphed over Roose velt, 50-42. Sandy, tied for 10th with Corvallis, beat Reynolds, 59 44, while the Spartans were upset by Lebanon 85-65. Turner Point Production Eagle Point Hoop Feature Eagle Point Phenominal scoring by Bill Turner, one of the state's leaders in point production, has been a fea ture of the Eagle Point high basketball team which won a Rogue league co-championship this season and enters the Dis trict 6 A-2 tournament next week end at Ashland. 9 Turner totalled a tremen dous 459 points in the Eagles' 20-game regular season and 5 Bulldog Seventh Finish Unbeaten ' McLoughlin Junior high seventh grade junior varsity, coached by Ralph Perkins, completed an unbeaten season on Friday with a 20 t ol6 win over its Hedrick basketball counterpart. The Bulldogs won eight tangles, playing two each with Hedrick, Lone Pine, Griffin Creek and Howard. 'Among the top McLoughlin squad members were Gary Dawson, Rick Larson, Joe Banks, Cliff Roberts, Ronnie Vincent and George Adams. BILL TURNER 459 Points for Eagles piled up 220 of them in the eight contests of the Rogue circuit.. His average for the season is 22.95 per game and for the league he had 27.5 per outing. Top effort by the sharpshooter was 38 in a tilt against Rogue River. According to available re ports after last week end, Tur ner ranked third in Oregon in nreD scoring and was amone 1 fnw rive tl-to dfin.nnint mart Nease Has 167 Second to Turner for the Eagles has been Jim Nease with 167 tallies and an 8.35 tabulation per game. Bill Hub bard followed with 134, with 7.44 average for 18 tuusles. Nease was also second high Eagle Point player within the league with 64 points and Hubbard had 61. Eagle Point was 6-2 in the Rogue loop to tie with Illin ois Valley which it defeated twice. For the full season, in which the Eagles played a number of tough foes outside the league, including five games with A-l schools, EP was 10-10. Against the "A-ls Eagle Point won two and lost three. They played such clubs as Myrtle Creek, No. 1 rated A-2 school, which is favored in the District 6 play-off, and the strong Yreka, Calif., crew. In the league Eagle Point piled up 487 points or 60.87 per game while rivals had 415 for 51.87. In their 20 games the Eagles had 1055 for 52.75 and opponents put in 1103 for 55.15. Good skiing with clear weather is expected at Cra ter Lake. , Grants Pass-Klamath Un ion High school, 1958 state A-l basketball champion, will be on hand at Eugene later this month to defend its title. Klamath nosed out Grants Pass 55 to 54 here Friday eve ning to assure itself a spot in the tournament pairings for the fourth straight year. Grants Pass was pushed out of the running for the South ern Oregon conference champ ionship but was still in con tention for one 'of the two berths in the state meet from District 6. The Pelicans had to surge from behind to grab the con test from the spirited Cave men. They finally went ahead in the game at 48 to 47 on a jump shot by Dean Dunson. GP tied up the s core at 48-all but KF took the lead for good at 50 to 48 with 23A minutes to go. 13-Poini GP Lead The Cavemen were still in the ball game when Dick Hayes put in two free tosses with 45 seconds left for 53 to 52. A pair of free chucks by Bob Petersen with 25 sec onds remaining put it 55 to 52. Five seconds were left when Rex Brenner swiped the ball and scored the final goal for Grants Pass. Grants Pass once led at 27 to 14 in the second quarter. The Cavemen had one bulge of 34 to 25 in the third panel and were on top 46 to 39 with less than 5i minutes to play. Intermission counts all favor ed the Cavemen 15 to 12, 29 to 23 and 40 to 39. Bob Petersen had 23 points for the Pels and Brenner had 21 for GP. Klamath put in only one field goal in the first quar ter. Grants Pass suffered a blow with 2V2 minutes left in the first half when tall John Fox suffered an ankle injury.
