Mcdford, Or., In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Western Hemisphere relations: A joint committee of Amer- i icans and Canadians, which ! has been studying American surplus wheat disposal pro grams, has just issued a report agreeing that American dump ing of subsidized surplus wheat has definitely hurt Can ada and will continue to do so. Who wrote the report? You'll be surprised. It was written by W. E. Hamilton, research director of the American Farm Bureau Federation, and W. M. Drum mond, a member of Canada's royal commission on price spreads of foods products-both of whom represent AGRICUL TURAL interests. HOW is Canada hurt? By paying high price subsidies, we promote over production of wheat in the United States. When our stor age facilities begin to bulge, we start dumping our surplus abroad. Some of it we sell at low prices. Some of it we give away. Naturally enough, that hurts the Canadians, who have wheat to sell. no MUCH for our Canadian 3 neighbors and their wheat i troubles. Let's take a look at our Mexican neighbors and their cotton troubles. We sub sidize overproduction of cot ton, as well as wheat. And We dump our surplus cotton abroad at bargain prices. That doesn't please our Mexican neighbors who have cotton to sell. Tf vou read the papers care fully, you must have noted that this cotton dumping busi tipss was discussed at consider able length the other day by President Eisenhower and Mexican President Mateos at their meeting in Acapulco the other day. President Mateos made It plain he isn't too happy about it. H OW about American farm ers r WASHINGTON the other day, Sen. John J. Williams of Delaware who, you will remember was a hay and feed dealer before he became a senator cited statistics show ing, he said, that under the government's price support program MAJOR BENEFITS have gone to very large cor-: porate farm operators. He said that in 1957 the federal government paid $3, 400,000 in price supports ,to THREE big farm operators in Arkansas, Mississippi and California. WHY do we do all this? The political farmers, who farm the farmers for votes instead of farming the soil for crops, continue to be lieve that a LOT OF VOTES can be garnered in election years by subsidizing agricul ture. " That's about the long and short of It. AH, ME! If, in our great country, we did only the things that are GOOD STATESMANSHIP Instead of doing so many things that are regarded by the politicians as GOOD POL ITICS, how wonderful it would be! FBI Studies Report Of Contest Fraud Portland The FBI was reported today to have en tered the investigation into a ring which supplied answers to newspapers' cash -paying crossword contests. Both the Oregon Journal and the Oregonian have an nounced discontinuance of the puzzles after saying they were victimized by the tips ters. The Journal quoted a spokesman for the FBI as say ing "no further comment" on the matter would be forth coming until the probe is completed. The Oregonian, meanwhile, quoted a man whom it said had turned down a chance to win part of a prize and had cooperated with the newspaper, as say ing he had received threaten ing telephone calls. 4-H Club News Sam's Thumpers The meeting of Sam's Thumpers Rabbit club was held at the home of Lucille Lowry Feb. 1. Lucille Lowry gave a talk on sanitation and Nancy Day gave a talk on "How to Feed the Rabbit." Linda Sommer and Nancy Day gave talks on safety. We had one visitor, Cassie Cuth bert, who hopes to join our club.
