Oregon, Monday, February 23, 1959 ' r There At Slill Some Things Unknown About Flowerlight Many common flowers have the peculiar ability to glow at night, giving off a soft white, green or bluish light. Science has looked with interest at many of these blos soms and has in some instanc-i es, been able to explain part of the mystery. There are some things about it still not too well understood. The deep orange colored, double marigolds actually il luminate their blossoms on dry, clear evenings by emit ting waves of light that play over the petals like mimic lightning. This light is green ish and sometimes so strong as to cast a glow on nearby leaves. The large blossoms of sun flowers often glow with vary ing degrees of light. The nas turtium is another one that, for some unknown reason, becomes luminous during cer tain times of the night. Tiger Lily. Too The tiger lily emulates a phosphorescent glow to such an extent that the flowers sometimes look like luminous bulbs of greenish light. Many mushrooms glow dur ing the darkness and many times oak leaves which have been dampened with dew or rain present a strange, eerie glow. Usually the yellow leaves which are covered with spots of mildew are the ones which emit the light. This is undoubtedly a fungus growth on the leaves which give forth the glow and is a result of decomposition. This is definitely different from the light- that plays over the living flowers. The latter is for a diferent purpose, and results, not from decay, but from some unexplained reas on still too complex for easy explanation. Perhaps flowers have the ability of storing up sunlight during the day and emitting it slowly after the sun has gone. Common granulated sugar has this propensity, and has been known to emit a soft glow of greenish light in a dark room. Diamonds and many other precious jew els give of rays of light that have been imparted to them hours before. You Can See It These light givers are fun damentally different than the light given off by living flow ers, however. The flowerlight is there, in your garden right now for a very definite reas on. Select a place where reflected light from streetlights does not neutralize the soft glow of p h o s p h o rescence and you too, can see one of the pro foundest mysteries of nature with your own eyes. Perhaps you also will see the reason for the light. Some where in the outer darkness night flying insects are wait ing for the little lights to come on; waiting to follow the beam to the flower, it self. This is the reason for the glow. The blossom needs the insect and it is doing all it can to guide the little night voyager to itself. There is a close association between flower and plant, insect and darkness; a n intimate rela tionship as vague and as mys terious as the soft glow of flowerlight itself. On the program for the evening will be demonstra tion put on by the parliamen tary group of the Crater chap ter, Future Farmers of Amer ica. Don Denning will also present his winning speech and James Backen's students will present a play on mental health. Past presidents of Crater PTA will be intro duced. Refreshments will be served. The Crater High school PTA executive committee met Feb. 17 at the school. A nom inating committee was select ed and plans were discussed for a food sale to raise money to meet the budget demands. Cakes, pies, and cookies will be sold at Gold Hill and Central Point. The date will be announced later. Maj. Gen. J. H. Hicks spoke on civil defense at the meet ing Thursday night of the Central Point Parent-Teacher association. Three guitar num bers were played by "The Eager Beavers" and Mrs. Lois Sullivan's room won the count fot the largest number of parents attending. There are now 625 mem bers in Central Point PTA. Gen. Hicks commented on the pleasure it gave him to see the number of men who at tended the Central Point PTA meetings. Charles A. Meyer made the announcement that Louie Alvarez had won the Jackson county grade school basketball free shot cham pionship in the contest held in Medford earlier Thursday evening. Fogle Jr. Fogle, 54-year-old supply department manager of the Federal Reserve Bank in Kan sas City, created the calendar as a hobby, copyrighted it and is now offering it to the United States and the world. It would consist of 13 months of 23 days each. Since that would add up to only 364 days, Fogle would tack an extra 24 hours onto the first day of the year. This would be designated Jan. Al-the "A" being New Year's Day and the "1" the normal working day that follows. Another 24 Hours Every fourth year, which is now leap year, would contain still another 24 hours at its very beginning and would be called Jan. AMl. The "M" would represent Meditation Day, a new holiday. Fogle calls his creation the "Almanebi Perpetual Calen dar," Almanebi was coined from the first two letters of the names of each member of his family - Alice, Margaret Ann, Neil and Bill. Its creator has spent about S1.000 developing and promot ing the calendar but doesn't at Corvallis Meyer also expressed his appreciation for the safety in struction and films which were presented at the Central Point schools by Sheriff Joe Walsh and Chief Criminal Deputy Paul Bettiol. In honor of Founder's Day, past presi dents of the Central Point PTA were introduced. The second grade mothers served refreshments. Mrs. Grover Mulkey, secre tary, announced that the Jackson County Farm bureau will meet Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Old Stage Realty office in Central Point. All members are welcome. The Willow Springs Home Extension unit will meet on Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Richard Savage, Old North Pacific highway, Central Point. The meeting will begin at 10:30 and a potluck lunch eon will be served at noon. Mary Pat Lucy, Jackson county home extension agent will give a demonstration on nutrition food values. He believes that if the U.S. would adopt his calendar, it would "become world - wide overnight." He has written all th U.S. senators and governors and most congressmen and has received several replies. "Like most new things," Fogle said, "it must buck the reluctance ' to change, But I think it will be accepted by the world in the next 10 years. Most people who see it are amazed at its simplicity and many advantages." Th calendar would make Sunday the last day of each week and Monday the first. There would have to be some juggling of holidays to make them conform to the Fogle system. New Year's Day, of course, would always be on a Mon day. Washington's Birthday would remain Feb. 22, but this too would always be a Mon day. Memorial Day would be a Sunday, May 28, but the holiday would be celebrated on the 29th, a Monday. Veterans, who are now given their Day on Nov.- 11, would have to wait just 24 hours, until the 12th, a Friday.
