6 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, February 23, 1959 Anderson Tallies 41 As Tornado Humbles Grants Pass 76-60 SOUTHERN OREGON CONFERENCE STANDINGS W 1 Klamath Falls 1 1 2 Medford 10 3 Grants Pass 8 5 Crater 2 10 Ashland 1 12 Pct .769 .615 .167 j077 A tremendous school and league record shattering per formance by Jerry Anderson spearheaded the Big Wind Saturday night at the Med ford High basketball aggrega tion fought to a 76 to 60 tri umph over Grants Pass and upped its second place margin over the. third running Cave- ,men to two full games in the Soutnern Oregon comerence Anderson amassed the huge total of 41 points for the Black Tornado in one of the finest individual efforts By an Oregon prep eager this season. The 6-3 junior and leading scorer for Medford through the current campaign, meshing a variety of shots, whooshed in 19 field goals in 26 attempts and rounded out his all-time Tornado High with three free tosses. Ending a slump of sorts for recent games, Andy had 23 points in the first half, led the quint in rebounding for the game with 11 retrieves and was a defensive, as well as offensive, cog for the Pear capital hoopmen. Medford and Grants Pass tussled nip and tuck for more than a quarter. Two minutes into the second chukker Med ford went ahead 20 to 19 and kept in front the rest of the distance. The Tornado had 11- point leads twice in the second period and twice in the third but by the three-quarter halt the gap had shrunk to three markers at 51 to 43. After a 53-50 standing in the early fourth panel Medford slowly pulled away and the final spread between the clubs was the largest of the night. Johnnie Olson and John Fox were the main offensive guns of the visiting Cavemen with a combined total of 43 points, just two better than Anderson's personal accumu lation. Olson hit for 24 and Fox 19. Fox had 10 rebounds as the Cavemen and Tornado broke even under the' back boards with 32 retrieves apiece. The Black Tornado put in 30 field goals and had a .464 average from the field. Grants Pass hit 22 from the field on even .400 shooting. Medford led 16 to 15 at the quarter and 41 to 32 at the half. . Olson with 11 points and Anderson with 10 paced their respective clubs in the first quarter which saw the lead switch five times. In the second canto Anderson put in 13 as the Tornado outscored GP 25 to 17. "In the third quarter Med ford's 11-point advantages were 45 to 34 and 51. to 40. Then in the last minute of the session Rodger Burton goaled and Fox and Olson each re corded combination field and free shots for a quick eight points to cut Medford to the 51 to 48. George Koch and Lowell Dean launched the fourth quarter with Medford free points. Olson hit a pusher from the corner for GP and 53 to 50. Anderson hit a gift er and the first of his seven field goals which spurrad Medford in the final push. But the difference was back to four points at 56 to 52 after Olson scored on a long push. Anderson tallied on an assist by Koch and Olson drove the base for 58 to 54. Then Andy recovered the ball and dribbled the length of the floor for a goal.. He contributed another free marker and a jumper from deep in the circle while Fox got a free toss for GP for a spread of 63 to 55 with three minutes to go. Anderson got his last field basket' for 41 counter total on a rebound with seven seconds remaining on the clock. .. Medford now needs two victories in its last three games to be sure of a state A-l tournament spot. The Tor nado meets Klamath Falls next Saturday after a Friday bye. Anderson's Saturday point total is the tops for the season for both the Tornado and the Southern Oregon conference an is believed to be the all time high individual score for both . Medford High and the league. Previous conference high this year was 36 by Olson oi Grants Pass against Crater. Former record for Medford was 34 by Larry Copple against Klamath Falls in 1955, so far as can be de termined in a hurried check. Victories in the junior var sity tiff, 50 to 37, and in the sophomore game, 55 to 50, against the Cavemen, made the night complete for Med ford. Medford JV, after lagging 10 to 14 at the quarter and 22 to 26 at the half, finally went on top 30 to 29 in the third panel and led 34 to 29 at the end of that period. Dick Ragsdale of Medford and Jim Purkett of GP each had 15 points. Tornado sophomore team had a 32 to 27 half margin. Jim Blacksmith re corded 28 for Grants Pass and John Tichenor 19 for Med fard. Central Point Meets Hedrick Central Point Central Point seventh and eighth grade cage teams have their final home frays of the season here Tuesday evening. They meet Hedrick m 6:30 and 7:30 tussles. On Thursday the Central Pointers will go to McLough- lin for final games. The Pointer quints have split in two game each with the Medford schools. Kansas State, Bids for NCAA Tourney By FRED DOWN United Press International Kansas State and Texas Christian hold "locks" on automatic bids to the NCAA basketball tournament today but the race for the national championship is once again a wide-open affair involving at least five teams. Kansas State clinched the Big Eight's invitation and Texas Christian won the right to represent the Southwest conference Saturday night while the race for national honors was intensified by Kentucky's easy 75-56 victory over Auburn and Maryland's upset of first-ranked North Carolina. With about two weeks of regular season left, that means a battle among Kansas State, Kentucky, North Caro JERRY ANDERSON Shatters Point Record KF Pelicans Victors Over Ashlanders Klamath Falls - Klamath Falls, averaging .549 from the field, whipped Ashland high 75 to 38 here Saturday eve ning to retain its one-game basketball edge over Medford in the Southern Oregon con ference. The Pelicans are now only one game away from a sure state tournament berth. They led Ashland at the quar ters 24 to 6, 45 to 12 and 64 to 24. United Press International Let's face it, the schedule makers really pulled a rock when they matched Califor MedfordTribune Red Raiders Bounce PSC For OCC Lead Ashland-Gordie Carrigan's 18 points and the top notch defensive play of Jimmy Mc Abee again led the Raiders of Southern Oregon college over Portland State 50-34 to vault the SOC hoopmen into first place in the Oregon Col legiate conference Saturday night. It was Carrigan, the 5-10 guard from Crater High, who put the Raiders ahead for keeps after Portland State had gone on top by two points early in the second half. Car rigan hit a free throw to make it 29-28 after McAbbe had tied the score on a jumper. Carrigan followed the first gift toss with an. outside set shot, two more free tosses and another set shot to put the Raiders up 35-32 with 7:42 remaining in the second half. McAbee, a 5-10 senior from Talent, playing his last game before the home crowd, not only played a top defensive game but he ended up second in scoring with 13 points. John Winters, the guard from" Portland State needed only 12 points for an all time scoring high in PSC history but the pressing McAbee held him to a scant two counters Saturday after limiting him to seven the evening before. GP Wrestling Rematch Billed Grants Pass One of the best cards of the year is an ticipated Tuesday night at the Josephine county fairgrounds wrestling arean. Wild Bill Savage will tan gle with handsome Nick Ko zak in a commission ordered rematch of their brawl of last week. The match last week was declared "no contest" by the referee after the two had left the ring and fought out side the building. The chairman of the Grants Pass Boxing commission, Chirp Johnson, ordered the rematch and held up Savages purse. Theone hour semi windup will give the fans a chance to see Nick's younger broth er, Jerry, in action against the colorful islander, O n i Wiki Wiki. Jerry is even fast er than Nick. Nothing could be more exciting next week end than a pair of tilts between the Bears and Huskies. Cal leads them by a half-game in the waning hours of the race. Beat Huskies Unfortunately, h o w e v er, Cal beat the Huskies twice within a week last January to close' out their regular sea son jousts in a hurry. Since then, Washington has won nine straight in a battle to overtake the Bears who keep a narrow distance by virtue of a seven game conference win splurge. Coach Pete Newell's men risk being knocked down into a tie for first tonight with Washington when they meet Oregon State at Corvallis. It is the fag end of three game road trip throughout the northwest and Oregon State goes into the pits with eight days rest. McAbee added four of his 13 counters in the last 25 seconds of the first stanza, firing one from more than 40 feet out as the buzzer sound ed to put the Raiders in com mand 21-15. After Carrigan hit his time ly points in the second half Punk Biddington added two jumpers and McAbee one to put the Raiders in front 39-32, a lead which the Vikings could not come back to. Carrigan, in taking high scoring honors, hit four set shots out of five attempts from the outside and converted eight straight free tosses be fore he missed his last. He also hit on a drive shot for his 18 total. Dave D'Olivo, the 6-4 center of the Raiders got eight points but he also stole off 15 re trieves as the Raiders out rebounded the visitors 42-36. Don Bridges of PSC was the only Viking to hit in the double figures aft week end and he got only 12 the second evening. SOC now has a 12-3 OCC record while Portland State is second a full game back with 10-3. Myrtle Creek, Umpqua Valley league winner, will take on the IV Henley victor in a March 6 game and Eagle Point will follow against Glide, the No. 2 Umpqua club. Glendale surged up in the fourth quarter to knot the Eagles Saturday. Score was 54 each at the end of regular time. Bud Smart's 30 foot pusher at the buzzer in the extra got the winning points. Turner had hit a field goal for Eagle Point and Glen Hatton two free shots for the Pirates in the overtime." Eddy dropped a second round match after tak ing a first round forfeit. Fun ston lost his first and second tussles. Grants Pass Third Barber lost in consolation finals Saturday after drop ping a first match and win ning a second over the week end. Warren won his first tus sle but lost his second and was eliminated when the man who beat him lost. . Grants Pass was third in A-l with 40 points. Klamath scored 22.
