2A MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdferd, Oregon, Monday. February 23, 1959 Judge Lonergan Hurt in Accident Portland-OT-Circuit Judge Franke J. Lonergan of Mult nomah county was in Provi dence hospital today with a hip injury suffered in a col lision Sunday morning north of Newport. Portland Postmaster Albert Hodler and three other per sons were injured. Hodler, Judge Lonergan and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence O'Neill of Portland were in one car en route here from Newport. The second car was driven by a Delake man, Vir gil Dixson, 63. The Medical A Mother Decides to Retain Authority In these days when hun dreds of thousands of parents think is advisable to abdicate and to turn over the con trol of the family to their small children, it is a joy to find an article by Jane Whit bread, telling of a mother who decided Br AJvarw to be old-fashioned, and to attend to her great responsi bilities to her youngsters. She clings to her grandmoth er's idea that often "Mother knows best." She does not feel that she is ruining a child's ego by teaching him to be polite to the guests in the home, and to be consider ate, and thoughtful of their comfort. When Junior wants to . go to the movie which shows lit tle but rape,1 fighting, mur der and hanging, this mother does not assume that .her child' must go simply because all the other mothers in the neighborhood have no sense. She says, "No dear: that is not a good movie for a small boy; wait a bit, and when a fine instructive movie comes, you can go." Recently I was talking to devoted and intelligent mother who, against her bet ter judgment, let her ex tremely sensitive boy go to see Dracula. He thought he should go because "all the other kids were going." He came Jiome sick with nervous ness, and for a week, he had such nightmares he couldn't get much sleep. Fortunately, he agrees now that such movies are not for him. As Mrs. Whitbread says so truly, today in most families, "if Sally, aged four, keeps snatching the boby's bottle away from him, no one wants to suggest that she stop; that might interfere with her growing up as a hostile, mean, psychopathic and unmarrige able woman." Years later, when Sally is practicing her piano lesson and the baby, then aged three, keeps pound ing the keys, no one should dare suggest that he stop that might interfere with his growing up to be the school's biggest bully! Where did we all get these ideas? I fear it was from people who did not have sense enough to direct their own lives very well, and who let their own children grow up to be "little stinkers." As I keep saying in this column, if good manners and pleasant and kindly and considerate and polite ways with people contribute so enormously to a person's success in life and they certainly do then why shouldn't we parents do everything possible to so train our child that by the times he is four-he is obedi ent, respectful of his elders and of the guest who comes into the home, fair to his brothers and sisters and play mates, and able to control whatever anti-social tenden cies he may have? My par ents taught me and my broth ers and sisters these things, and I cannot see that any of us were the least bit worse for suc,h training. We have all been sane and successful in life. I am certain that much of the theory that has been writ ten about mental troubles be ing due to early correction of children is utterly stupid. I was just reading the life of one of the men who gave us much of our psychiatric theory, and his biographer shows us that he wrote his first "great book" while he was manic (tempor arily unbalanced). He was then about 20 poorly edu cated, and without any ex perience with mental patients. He wrote his book out of the fantasies he had while his 'mind was disturbed and rac ing along. Because phychia trists could not make much sense out of his book, they assume it must be very pro found, and so it made a great hit and ran through four edi tions! And this is the sort of writing that has caused thou sands of parents to keep say ing "Don't suggest to Junior that he stop making a terri ble pest of himself while guests are present; that could conjure him mentally in his later years." Are we parents sane when we allow such an illogical idea? Later in life when the boy who was deliberately allowed to grow up without consider ation for the comforts and rights of others becomes a de linquent and gets arrested, perhaps for knifing a school mate or setting fire to the hair of the girl sitting in front of him, the psychiatric inves tigator who is called in is likely to tell the stricken par ents that it is all their fault they must sometime or oth er have injured the child by once asking him to behave himself a bit. Just now I get a letter from the unhappy mother of a psychopathically delinquent son. She says it was enough of a heartbreak to have the sorrow and the disgrace of a court action; but now it is worse since the school psy chiatrist, without asking her any questions, has assured her that she is the one respon sible for all of her son's men tal aberrations. As she says, it is possible that at some time she forgot for a moment, and hurt his ego, but she can not remember when she ever tried to control him or to teach him to behave! Fpr goodness sake, cannot we parents see again what our grandparents saw that it is well for our children to be taught manners- and self control? Cannot we parents see, also, that our children are happier if we show enough interest in them to help them to decide about many things? It is not good for a small child to have to make all his decisions for himself. Many children are happy to be guided by some one with a firm hand. It is rough on a child to make him run the home!
