One is the visit of Mrs. Freida Burnside of the Fam ily Service Agency of Amer ica on Feb. 26 and 27, and the .other is a family life con ference scheduled Saturday, March 7, at Hedrick Junior High school with Dr. Will Drum of Portland State col lege as speaker. Mrs. Burnside is appearing in Medford at the request of the Mental Health committee to assist in the evaluation of the volunteer Marriage Coun selling service, which is now concluding its work. It is also hoped that she will have suggestions to make in helping the committee and other community leaders de cide what the next steps should be in providing family counselling on a permanent basis. Meeting Scheduled On Thursday afternoon sihe will meet with the profession al staff of the Child Guidance Clinic and with the marriage counsellors. She will also be interviewed on K B E S-TV from 4:05 to 4:20 p.m. In the evening she will meet with the Mental Health committee at 8 o'clock at the courthouse auditorium. Miss Celia Walker, chairman of the committee, and other leaders, hope the latter meet ing will lead to definite rec ommendations for setting up a professionally staffed coun selling services in Jackson county. On Friday, Feb: 27, there will be a luncheon meeting at the Red Cross building with Mrs. Burnside, at which it is hoped there may be a more representative gather ing of community leaders and interested people who will hear ' her recommendations and those of the Mental Health committee. -Family Life Conference ' The Family Life Conference on March 7 at Hedrick Jun-1 ior High is designed for par- j ents, teachers, doctors, law-j vears and vouth leaders. ! It is designed to answer such questions as: "What are the values of marriage and family living courses in our schools?" "Why do families break up? What can we do to prevent divorce?" "What is the changing role of the father? the mother? the adol escent?" "How are the church es meeting the challenge of the changing family?" "What do we mean by discipline?" The conference opens with registration at 9 a.m. There will be exhibits of literature on family living available. The keynote address by Dr. Will Drum will be given at 9:30 a.m. The topic is "What Kind of an Adult Is Your Child Going to Be?" At 10:30 a.m. there will be a coffee break,, followed by sectional discussions. A noon luncheon will be served, fol lowed by a panel in which Dr. Drum will summarize the section reports and make pos itive suggestions. Reservations for the lunch eons may be made through the Tuberculosis and Health association, SPring , 2-4818, the YMCA, SPring 2-6295, or the health department, SPring 3-6211. From Austria ' Dr. Drum originally came from Austria, where he had some rigorous experiences under the Nazis. He has esta blished himself in Oregon as a leader in the family life field, as indicated by the po sitions he holds. Bradley Connors, counselor for public affairs at the United States Embassy here . and a former newspaper man, died Friday of cancer. A veteran public affairs officer, he was in charge of the embassy's U. S. Information Service, in addi tion to serving as counselor for public affairs. A native of Newark, he was a reporter arid later ' city editor for the Newark Star-Ledger for six years before entering govern ment service.
