Truck Reported Missing Found Here A truck reported missing since Dec. 3 enroute from Woodland, Calif, to Salem was discovered here Wednes day at Fourth and Fir sts., ac cording to Medford police. James Beasley Potts, Sa lem, told police he had hired a "John Edward Jones" in Woodland Dec. 3 to drive the truck to Salem. Police reported that a prop erty owner at Fir and Fourth sts. said he gave an unidenti fied person permission to park the truck there Dec. 4. The driver was quoted as say ing the truck's engine needed repairs. Police said a felony war rant charging Jones with auto theft was issued Jan. 7 or 8, after Potts had complained to J state police. ' Potts was told of the truck's presence here by a service station attendant who knew him, according to the report. A Medford detective said Potts told him he had collect ed insurance compensation for the truck's loss Tuesday. GOLD HILL Library Gets Books By MRS. CLYDE KELL Gold Hill-Mrs. Carl Eouth, local librarian, said she has completed shelving a supple mentary shipment of books from the Medford library to finish out the intended quota of books for the Gold Hill li brary. The library is open on Tuesdays and Fridays be tween 2 and 5 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. Mrs. Routh said all in terested persons in the area are invited to make use of the library. A shipment of at least 20 of the newer adult books are received each month. The Crater High Parent Teachers association will meet Monday, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m. in the Crater cafetor ium. A program which will in clude a short play on mental health, directed by Jim Back en, dramatic and junior Eng lish teacher, has been arrang ed. Past presidents of the units will be honored in conjunc tion with Founder's day. Also to be featured on the program will be a parliamen tary team demonstration by the Crater FFA members and in connection with the FFA portion of the program, Don ald Deming, will give his con test speech. Mrs. Grover Mulkey and Mrs. Melvin Burnette, both of Gold Hill and members of the Crater High PTA execu tive board, attended a meet ing, called by Roy Henry, president of the unit at the high school Tuesday, Feb. 17 Transamerica Sells Astoria Interests San Francisco -UPD- Trans america Corporation has com pleted the sale of its interest in Columbia River Packers Association of Astoria, Ore. Transamerica President F. N. Belgrano Jr. said the corpo ration sold 100,104 shares ef stock in the final transfer of ownership. Eighty ' per cent was acquired by Castel it Cooke, Honolulu, and 20 per cent by Robert Dant of Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Quinn visited their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charl es Whitlock, in Medford, Sun day. Mrs. Richard Whitlock, who was injured in an acci dent, and hospitalized for sev eral weeks in Portland, ar rived in Medford by plane Sunday and will be a house guest in the home of her hus band's parents, the Charles Whitlocks while she is convalescing. Upon the suggestion of var ious interested persons here, a number of Gold Hill resi dents circulated petitions op posing a proposed school re organization plan which would have involved this area. Residents have evacuated their homes, and the town (pop. 215) is now deserted, except for a few persons who return to sal vage some of their possession, Petitions with more than 170 signers were presented to the Jackson County Reorgan ization committee. Mrs. Leon ard McMahan Said those as sisting her in circulating the petitions were Mrs. Georgia Wilson, Mrs. Thelbert Wright, Mrs. Kenneth Fluck, Mrs. William Wright, Mrs. George Allen, Mrs. Joe Estremado, and Mrs. Millie Walker. Plans were made by mem bers of the Woman's Society of the Gold Hill Community Methodist church to give a smorgasborg dinner in April. The group met at the home of Mrs. Sam Jones Friday, Feb. 13. Mrs. John Novak was co hostess. The business session was conducted by Mrs. E. C. Hoffman, president. Mrs. Roy Cameron gave the devotions. Mrs. Harriett El liott was in charge of the pro gram, "A New Frontier: Lit eracy and Christian Litera ture." Several women partici pated in the program. A dessert luncheon preced ed the business and program, at which time refreshments were served to 18 members and two visitors,' Mrs. Milton Scank of Sams Valley and Mrs. Tony Swanson, Valen tine, Neb. Mrs. Swanson has been a houseguest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Novak in Medford. Mrs. George Dorman will be hostess for the Mar. 13 meeting of the Woman's So ciety and .Mrs. Thomas Z. Smiths will be cohostess A number of people have returned to their homes after coming to Gold Hill to attend the funeral of George L. Haff, a well-known resident who died unexpectedly at his home here Feb. 8. Returning to their homes in Portland after being house guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thompson were two of Mr. Haff's neices, Mrs. Bessie Steelhammer and Mrs. Alma Parrott. Mr. and - Mrs. Raymond Thompson also left last weekend for their home in Tacoma, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Philip (Pete) Thompson and children, Pamela and Ke v e n , returned to Seattle, Wash. While in southern Ore gon they were houseguests in the home of Mrs. Philip Thompson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Wright In Central Point. Mr. and Mrs. George Ham mersly, long time friends of the Thompsons and Mr. Haff, came from their home in Yre ka, Calif, for the funeral and were houseguests while here several days in the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Walker. . Hydraulic Jet Mining Suited To Coal Industry San Francisco (Science Service)- Hydraulic jet min ing has a definite application in the coal industry, and coal pipelines may become more popular as rail rates increase. This was reported to the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, here, by John H. Baker of Ameri can Gilsonite Co., Salt Lake City. But hydraulic mining is not a cure-all, he said, and there are probably many instances where it would not work at all. To Fracture Ore Jet cutting methods in the United States, Baker said, are based on using small quanti ties of high pressure water to fracture and dislodge the ore, and then low pressure water to fume or convey the ore. The jet nozzle is kept as close to the face as possible because there is a definite loss in efficiency as the distance be tween the working face and the nozzle increases. Fracturing, bedding planes and cleavage faces are much more important than hard ness of the material in the proper breaking of the ore, he said. . Trench Diggers Break Phone Cable Portland - (UPD - Telephone company cable splicers work ed late Thursday night to re store service to some 400 tele phones in the Lake Grove area served by the .Neptune 6 exchange. , Service was interrupted Thursday afternoon when ' a trench digging crew broke a telephone cable containing 300 pairs of wires. It is orbiting earth, Cos! of Living In Northwest Down San Francisco-(UPD-The Bu-1 cent from December in Seat- reau of Labor Statistics an nounced today that the cost of living dropped slightly in the Pacific Northwest last month while remaining gen erally unchanged in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas. Max D. Kossoris, regional director of the bureau, said food prices declined by 0.1 per tie last month. The price level for all items dropped by 0.2 per cent in Portland since last October. The food price index for San Francisco increased by 0.2 per cent in January, while the cost of living remained un changed between December and January for Los Angeles residents. Hepatitis Wave Is Experienced In United States Washington (Science Service)- A substantial increase in the number of cases of infec tious and serum hepatitis in dicates that the U.S. is in for another bout with this liver damaging disease. The disease is on the up swing in this country, Dr. C. C. Dauer, medical adviser for the National Office of Vital Statistics, told Science Serv ice. This is probably the be ginning of another cycle that will last through the next two years, he said. Above Year Age The largest number of cases for one week since early 1956 has been reported by the U.S. Public Health Service. A to tal of 608 cases were reported for the week. This is more thaji 75 per cent above the number of cases that were reported for the comparable week one year ago. Until the last six 'months, the number of cases reported weekly was slipping down. Since then the number has slowly risen. The disease usually reaches its peak in March, after which it is exr pected to dip for the summer months, he explained. But next winter, will no doubt see another 'increase, perhaps more so than this season. The last wave of hepa titis reached a peak in 1954. No Vaccine Available The recent cases of hepa titis that have been reported from U.S. Navy ships in the Mediterranean have not been included in these latest sta tistics. There is no vaccine for this virus that travels in the blood stream of humans. Doctors can use an immune serum globulin that protects persons for between six and eight weeks. But widespread admin istration' of such a serum would be . impractical. The serum is expensive, difficult to obtain, and, generally, not available in large quantities.
