i If MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdforl, Ortjon, Monday, February 16, 1959 CENTRAL POINT FFA Wins in Contest Br DORIS HUGHES Central Point - The Crater High school Future Farmers of America took part in the district skills contest at Marshfield Saturday. The con test included record books. chaDter record books and shop skills, such as welding Crater placed first in six of the 14 contests, second in one and third in two. Robert Bibey, a sophomore placed first in the acetylene welding contest. He nas Deen enrolled in agriculture one semester. Pete Melsted and Jim Frink represented Crater in the welding contest. Mike Redmond of Crater High vhool narticroated in the mathematics contest. Crater High school placed first in both agricultural spelling and rope work. Rus sel Frink and Gary Skaggs, both freshmen, won the two first places. The Crater Chap ter secretary's book won a third place award. The Eagle Point book won first place and will be entered in the state contest at Corvallis Mar. 16. Mike Redmond's treasurer's account book placed first. Mike, a Crater senior, has spent many hours preparing the book for the contest. The chapter has a yearly budget of well over $2,000. The Crater Chapter scrap book kept by Don Denning, Chapter reporter, also won a first place award. Denning's scrap book will now be enter ed in the State contest. The project record book contest was divided into three divisions. The first contest on books not completely finished was won by Douglas Doerner. The sophomore completed record book contest was won by Bill Morgan of Eagle Point. Pete Melsted of Crater placed third. The advanced completed record book was won by Jim Ross of Marsh field and Don Ryan of Crater placed second. Crater High School Future Farmers of America Rogue Ramblers placed first in the talent contest. The group of five guitar players have per formed on many local radio programs, personal appear ances and television programs. In the group are Tom and Dennis Samples, Floyd and Leon Sherman and Dennis Fisher. Don Denning is mast er of ceremonies for the group. This group will enter the state contest in the spring. SDrine vacation for the schools in District 6C will be Mar. 16 to 20, inclusive. The Oregon Education association will meet in Portland March 19 and 20. - The woman who receives the penny will bake the next birthday cake.. The Central Point group will attend the rally which will be held in Grants Pass March 25. The Crater Grandmothers club will meet Feb. 16 at the home of Mrs. Oscar Minnick, 145 Alder St., Central Point. Mrs. George Rainey will be cohostess. Mrs. Minnick, pub 1 icily chairman, reminded members to take flower seed to be sold at the meeting. Ike Urges Iranian Shah To Beware Washington -JUPD- President Eisenhower has sent a per sonal message to the Shah of Iran urging him to beware of Soviet overtures and to stand firm with his Western arid Baghdad Pact allies. An informed source said the message was sent late last week while a high level So viet political mission was in Teheran discussing an alleged non-aggression pact. - State Department press of ficer Lincoln White declined to comment. The Iranian government an- Los Angeles -HTJ-'West Ber lin Mayor Willy Brandt indi cated Saturday that, on cer tain conditions, he would agree with a Soviet plan on a solution to the Berlin crisis through a gradual, withdrawal of Russian and U.S. troops from Germany. He said in an interview he would not oppose such a plan if it were tried "in certain areas and with' limitations." nounced Thursday that the talks had broken off and that the Soviet mission had re turned to Moscow. The Soviet government charged that American pressure caused the break-off and paved the way for U. S.-Iran military pact. Governor, Power Group Air Request Salem-fllPD-Gov. Mark Hat field and representatives of public and private power groups are holding a series of meetings to determine how much dump power can be diverted to California with out cutting down on supply to Oregon consumers. Hatfield said Friday he be gan the conference immedi ately upon receipt of a mes sage "from California Gov. Edmund Brown asking both Oregon and Washington if they could arrange to. send surplus power to northern California. "Discussions have been held by my office with officials of Bonneville Power Admin istration and further meetings with public and private groups are planned," Hatfield said. He added that 'announcement of some tangible line of action is expected in about two weeks. TUNISIA CLAIMS ATTACK Tunis -UPD- Tunisia charged Saturday that three French fighter planes carried out a low-level strafing attack against a small Tunisian vil lage along the Algerian bord er. Two Tunisians were re ported killed and eight others injured in the attack. Boilermakers Ruled 'Unfair' Portland (UPD A national labor relations board trial ex aminer ruled Friday that the AFIrCIO Boilermakers union, its vice president for the Pa cific Northwest and its local in Eugene were guilty of un fair labor practices. James R. Hemingway, the examiner, ruled that the Eu gene local and the interna tional union illegally discrim inated against two Portland members, George B. Seybold and Orran L. Chamberlain, in connection wtih hiring and tenure of employment. Hemingway also ruled that the Eugene local violated the Taft-Hartley law with main tenance of an illegal hiring hall, and that John Stender, Boilermakers vice president, violated the law by threaten ing Seybold and Chamberlain "with action that would im pair their obtaining or retain ing employment unless they fiould withdraw charges fil-sd with the board."
