Uniform Bowl
Policy Wanted
For Acadamies
By TOM NELSON
Washington -(UPD- Defense
Secretary Neil H. McElroy
today studied a request from
a Southern congressman for
a uniform policy of service
academy participation in post
season bowl games.
Rep. F. Edward Hebert (D.-
La.) in a letter to McElroy,
urged that no bowl be "dis
criminated against" because
of local segregation laws. His
congressional district includes
New Orleans, site of the
Sugar Bowl.
There was no immediate
comment from McElroy's of
fice. A spokesman said the
secretary "obviously won't
want to shoot from the hip,"
on Hebert's statement. He
said study would have to be
given to the proposal.
Each Determine
At present each of the three
services acadamies Army,
Navy and Air Force -deter
mines whether its team shall
play in bowl games.
As the problem was pre
sented by Hebert, McElroy
also would ultimately give his
views whether teams from the
three service academies
should play in Southern states
with segregation laws prohi
biting mixed athletic contests.
Hebert said in the letter
that it was silly to have "one
academy with one policy, an
other academy with a "second
policy and a third academy
with still a third policy."

Erskine was the 29th
