Th Eggplant's Beauty Is All External The eggplant does not have the deliciousness of the to mato, the popularity of corn, the nutrition of peas or corn or beans or the universal ap peal of potatoes. Even the cabbage and cauliflower rate higher. ' The eggplant just can't seem to reach any degree of appeal, as far as taste is concerned. It has the look-plump sides, as smooth as velvet, a glossy color, and a symmetrical shape-it's very beautifully built. It even has a certain degree of poise, grace and charm; if these attributes can be applied to a vegetable. As far as eye-appeal goes, it al ways can compete in the fi nals; but the contest depends on more than mere beauty. As far as food value is con cerned it rates rather low. Very few vitamins hide in the pulp of the eggplant, and what few there are present seem pretty weak and dis pirited. About all that. can be honestly said abut its value as a food, is that it furnishes bulk, or is a basis for com binations of other vegetables. The eggplant originated in the East Indies, and there, as in many other places, is known as the Guinea squash. The botanists say it is a rela tive of the tomato, but this relation would appear to' be many times removed. Al though it is a tropical plant, its cultivation has been ex tended into the temperate zones. Its rapid growth in rich soil has made it possible to bring the plant to maturity during the short summer sea son of states many hundreds of miles away from a trop ical climate. The extensiveness ' of the plant's cultivation is partly due to the attractiveness of the fruit. Probably many peo ple buy it because it looks so good. The ovoid fruit is satiny smooth and of a rich purple color. Another species, coal-black in color, also has become common. The white and yellow varieties appear rather anemic, and their sick ly color detracts from their sales appeal. In rich soil the plant is a Gertrude S.-I.want to make up for the child we lost. Louis S.-We must put the past behind us. Gertrude S. - My husband and I have been married six years and have two children. We could be very happy, but I have a terrible thing prey ing on my mind. My husband and I were in timately involved before we got married. I became preg nant and resorted to illegal methods to get out of this dif ficulty. This was really my husbands' fault. I wanted to have the child, but he said it was impossible-he didn't have a decent job, etc. . . I had a religious upbring ing, but my husband did not. He can't understand how I feel about this. I want to have another child to make up for the one we lost, but Louis doesn't see things my way. If only he would try to under stand my feelings I wouldn't have to bear this burden alone. Louis S.-I do understand Gertrude's feelings and I sym pathize with her. It was not an easy thing to do and per haps it wasn't' the right thing to do, but it's done. What's done is done and we must push the past behind us. We have two wonderful healthy children now. I think that makes a fine little family. It's all I'll ever be able to do right by. My job is fair, but the" way things are going today I'll never keep up with very prolific .producer; and with any kind of a season the market becomes glutted. When other vegetables are selling by the pound, the poor old eggplant can be bought for a few cents for a half bushel. With rich, well drained soil, freedom from insect pests, and proper cultivation each plant will raise an enormous quan tity of fruit. But after all the work you still have just an eggplant. But maybe you like it. If so, you're livin' (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1959) New Gas Chamber Under Construction the cost of living. I feel that it's unfair of Gertrude to blame me for what happened in the past. It's true that I urged it, but she didn't talk about it then the way she does now. How was I to know that she would have so many regrets? I may have done wrong, but I m no monster. e The Council: We think that Gertrude is going to the wrong source and seeking the wrong remedy for her oppres sive sense of guilt. Her hus band cannot give her forgive ness or comfort on this score and she has no right to think in terms of putting such a burden. on a child. Psychologists and family case workers find that when a child is conceived for the purpose of righting some wrong' or to correct or alle viate a bad situation, things work out very poorly for both child and" parents. A child should be wanted purely for itself and as the flowering of the . love of the parents. When Gertrude sees that the new child doesnf really re lieve her sense of guilt, she will unconsciously resent it. It is unfair to ask that one child serve as a stand-in for another or as a sop to a par ent's need. . Gertrude is apparently writhing in many different di rections in her effort to re lieve her guilt. Her attempt to place the blame on her husband fails badly. She can lash out at him, but she can't hide from herself the fact that she was a responsible human being and did not be have according to her own standards of right. Gertrude's guilt is so strong that she fears going to the only source from which there is the possibility of a little relief and new understanding- clergyman of her own faith. Possibly he can help her find her way out of the destructive tangle she is build ing for herself and her fam ily. ' - (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) A new gas chamber for dis posal of stray dogs at the Jackson county pound should be ready for operation in ap proximately 10 days, County Commissioner Ralph James said Thursday. Cost of constructing the chamber out of sheet metal is estimated at $475 to $500. The work is being done by Berg man's shop on Carter Lake highway. The new chamber, when completed, will be 48 inches high and measure six feet long and six feet wide. It will weigh 900 pounds, but can be shifted around on skids, James said. Construction of the new disposal chamber was started following complaints that present means of disposing of dogs by electrocution is inhumane. COMMUNITY SPIRIT Pierre, S.
