Oregon City - ITD A tax
payer's suit challenging the
constitutionality of the Orp-

! filed in Circuit Court here to
day.
The law directs all public
school districts to provide
textbooks for use by grade
school students in "standard
Schools."
Dr. Judah Bierman of Port
land, Oregon chairman of the
American Civil Liberties
Union, said the union consid
ers a court test of the consti
tutionality of the law neces
sary and proper. He said:
"Supplying textbooks at
public expense for use in
parochial schools breaches the
wall of separation of church
and state. Such action con
stitutes a form of state aid" to
religious institutions. The
ACLU believes the sanctity
of religion and the integrity
of the state are both best pro
tected when the activities of
both are kept separate."
