Every square inch of the earth's surface has its com plement of wriggling, crawl ing creatures classified under the all embracing erroneous name of "bugs." It is a silent army, living on the land, infiltrating every nook and crevice, occupying every strategic position, win ning every engagement! crea tures whose life cycles are so rapid that several generations are hatched within a few months. Changing conditions can be adopted and habits and characteristics can be al tered to adapt the insect to environment changes, making possible adjustments to meet radically changing conditions almost simultaneously with their happening. Many species are absolutely essential to man's continued existence. These beneficial in sects help us in many and devious ways, perhaps assist us in ways in which, at pres ent, we are not conscious. 'Bugs Eat First' Someone said once that the "bugs" must eat before' we do. There is considerable truth in this. Actually every food that man partakes of is also food for insects. They have the advantage of taking first choice, inasmuch as they de vour it before it is ripe or matured enough for human consumption. , In spite of insecticides ga lore, the army of insects con tinues to survive and the in sects will, by their tremend ous power of adaptability, immunize themselves to a great degree of all poisons. What kills one kind readily is ineffective on others. It seems as if "what is one bug's poison is another- bug's food." As long as this is true, we can learn much by carefully observing them, watching their ways and how they con tinue to live, in spite of our dislike and efforts to make our world a bugless Eden. Another World Here are denizens of an other world. A world with us, but not of us. A wonder- world of strangeness and un explained phenomena. A world at our very feet, at our finger tips, within the inti mate circle of our every day lives, but still comparatively unknown and partly unseen. In our gardens, lawns or woodlots, in our pools, lakes and rivers there are thousands of species of insects which we have never seen or whose ex istence we have never sus- spected. They are living their strange lives within inches of our hurrying feet. Through the alchemy of metamorphosis, they are changing from ugly grub and larva to the gorgeous beauty of the butterfly, or the ephemeral ecstasy of a night flying motn, who, creat ed without a mouth, lives its short span of a few hours only to deposit her tiny eggs, which hatch into the crawling worm that eats cabbages and de stroys the gardens of kings. Cub Scouts Pack 4, Webelos Den The Webelos Den of Pack 4, Oak Grove, visited Camp White Saturday, Feb. 7. The Den started its visit by taking magazines for the men tead. They visited the model rail road room, where there also was a display of carvings and paintings. They went through the hobby shop, stopping and visiting with men on the way. Some of the men visited were Walter Holman, who built the model railroad; Van Winkle, who had a display of carvings and paintings; L. E. (Rocky) Farlinger, who show ed some stones; Ward Stand ard, who gave the boys arti-" ficial flowers and showed them his loom work; M. Jones, Mr. Wells, Leo Montano, who did leather work; and Alvin O. Young, who demonstrated work on the lathe. The group from Pack 4 in cluded Ralph Fuget,. Craig Parsons, Rickey Howell, David Rott, Paul (Butch) Lar son, Douglas Black, patrol leader; George Bryant, Den master; Craig Byrant, and Steve Eichelberger, Den chief. Nixon Schedules Talks in California Washington -(UPD-Vice Pres ident Richard M. Nixon is go ing home to California this week end for some important pre -1960 pulse -taking and GOP organizational talks in San Francisco and Los An geles.
