Tanya Enders, Nora Ian Schell, Sandra Kline. De Russell and Peggy Fisch Senior conferences began this week with senior girls making appointments with their dean, Mrs. Grace Berg. Senior boys will begin their interviews soon. , During the conferences, stu dents go over all test scores which have accumulated dur ing the last three years. These include tests in reading, men tal aptitude, etc. As a result, each student can discover whether or not his aptitude equals his interest in a certain profession. , "You must go on to some form of higher education af ter high . school" was the ad monition of Frances Kicker- son, to the three classes at the high school Wednesday in the auditorium. "Whether you attend a trade school or a state or pri- tinue your education in some way." continued Mr. Nicker son. "Soon society will have no room for the unskilled work er and the possession of only a high school diploma will get you nowhere." With this advice, he gave the warning that sophomores and juniors bring up their grade averages before they have slipped so low in grades that they will not be permit ted to enter college. After his speech, Mr. Nick erson answered q ue s t i o n s from the floor. Questions ranged from the cost of col lege and the requirements of entering college to the ad vantages and disadvantages of sororities. I Del Oregon, Sunday, February 8, 1959 Mews tives from SOC, Oregon State college, the Univesity of Ore gon, and several .other Oregon colleges. The juniors and sophomores returned to their classes after their meeting with the repre sentatives. Francis B. Nickerson, exec utive secretary of the Oregon state system of higher educa tion, was also the main speak er at the career night meeting Feb. 3. Nickerson spoke to the parents and students brief ly on career planning. He then introduced the guest speakers who represented sev en vocational areas. After the speeches, meetings were held for the seven vocational fields.. Refreshments were served and the speakers an swered individual questions. Medford's Girls' Athletic as sociation attended an all around . sports playday at Eagle Point Feb. 7. The girls left at 8:15 ajn. and returned in the late afternoon. The GAA is sponsoring tournaments in ping-pong and shuffleboard. Pra oticefor these events will begin this week. Both the Pep club and the Order of the "M" are working on plans for assemblies to be put on individually by each group. The Pep club attended the Grants Pass game Friday. George Ice, ASB vice pres ident, conducted the Inter- club council meeting which was held in the auditorium Feb. 3 during registration roof. Presidents of all school clubs and organizations at tended, and were reminded that their club treasurers must make out a report each month to be given to the ASB treas urer, Sandy Hess. Several oi the 'larger clubs, including the three classes and Pep club, were appointed to pre sent an assembly in the near future. Many students attended the "old fashioned" Pep assembly Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. On the agenda, Frank Roelandt talked and the rally squad led the group in yells and the school song. A funeral serv ice for the Grants Pass Cave- Imen was held by Dave Hav- lick and Mike Hartley. Mondav after school a bowl ing meeting was held with Don Newman presiding. The purpose of the meeting was to find out why the attend ance down at the bowling al lev on Wednesday nights had fallen off. Also the rules and regulations for league bowl ing were discussed. . Senior Symphony is the new addition to the Medford varsity band. This new orga nization is made up of seniors and juniors from the main band. Its purpose is to play only symphony music. This new idea in the formation of bands is only the first in a series. It is hoped that a con cert band and a marching band can soon be added to the regular varsity band. Claudia Hoover has been se lected to attend the Northwest Music conference band in Se attle. Some 1,000 applications were received from the six Northwest states, represent ing 220 schools. Claudia is a senior and will represent the entire Medford band. i The Future Homemakers of America met Feb. 5 after school to show a movie on good grooming and to discuss the state convention. The members were told that if they wanted to attend the con vention they were to write the answer to an essay ques tion. According to the qual ity and content of the answer, the officers would pick those girls whoi would be allowed to go. After well over a month's absence, Mrs. Juanita Ander son, home nursing teacher and Future Nurses of Amer ica advisor, was able to re turn to teaching last Monday. Mrs. Anderson had been in the hospital to have an oper ation on her knee. Hedrick Junior High By Nancy Duncan Ninth grade wrestlers journeyed to Grants Pass Saturday to participate in the Southern Oregon Conference Frosh Wrestling tournament. All grades of the junior high school have been taking part in "rhythms" since Jan. 26. "Rhythms" is a segment of the students' physical edu cation program and is de signed to help students de velop poise as well as co ordination by training them in square dancing and other group dances. Aside from a few bashful and reluctant boys, the majority of the stu dents find "rhythms" , not only educational but also en joyable. Physical education instructors supervising the three-week phase of the co educational activity are Bar bara Hanel, Mary Ann Atha- nas, Barney Riggs, and Marty Ramp. Two teams from the Hunter safety program met Thurs day after school in rifle team competition. Norm Olson, Bill Corbin, Scott Carpenter, Bill Thompson, and Gretchen Stein of team one defeated Dick Swan, Jim Douglass, Bob Reichers, John Gilbert- son, and Larry Berg of team two 426 to 418. Bill Thomp son of team one was high man with a score of 91 in 10 shots. Team two member, Jim Douglass, fired a score of 48 in five shots. Jim Henson, a ninth grade Hedrick student, was his dist rict's Boy Scout representa tive and guest at Gov. Mark Hatfield's lunch given in honor of Boy Scout week. Jim, along with a Cub Scout and an Explorer Scout, at tended the lunch Friday. Report cards covering the second nine weeks of school were given out Wednesday, Feb 4. The second Hedrick Junior High PTA meeting of the year will be held Monday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 pjn. Teachers will be in their rooms to wel come interested parents. A business meeting later in the evening will be followed by refreshments. Entertainment will be presented several stu dent groups. . A number of Hedrick stu dents and parents attended career night at the high school -Tuesday, Feb. 3. Stu dents and parents could choose a career area which most interested them. Speak ers in such fields as engineer ing, science, humanities, edu cation, and nursing were present from several Oregon colleges. i v Pioneers from the middle 1800s seemed to return to Hedrick Saturday night when students attending the Future Homemakers' dance arrived in Centennial comtumes. The girl date boy dance was given a Centennial theme by the FHA girls who wished to help honor the state's month, Feb ruary, and 100th year of statehood. McLoughlin Junior High By Joel Gregory, Donna Marin and Lois Sledman Sonny Leffler and Sheryl Martni reigned as the King and Queen of Hearts at the FHA Cupid's Follies Friday night in .the girls' gym. The princesses and princes chosen for the royal court were Sue Nelson and Johnny Gates, eighth grade and Leslie Stan ley and Mike Barnes, seventh grade. Entertainment during the intermission featured Jodell Hertager and Donna Johnson doing a jazz tap dance and Billy Heyerman and Norman Renner doing a pantomine called "Little Space Girls." Devonne Prough was the general chairman for the af fair. Student teachers for this nine weeks are Han Sang Keun . from Korea, teaching geography in Mrs. Marvel Yung's room; Bill Harbin, geography, under the super vision of Mrs. Louise Davis; Larry Maurer, arithmetic, with Mrs. Eula Foley; and Bob Oden working with John Reed's science classes. All are from Southern Oregon col lege. The freshmen 'wrestling team were found to be the defending Southern Oregon Conference champions in the wrestling tournament sched uled in Grants Pass Saturday. Coaches John Reed and Ed Doran reported that the Bull dogs were in good shape and should retain their title. The Library club met Wednesday to nominate new Grange News Phoenix Grange A centennial program has been planned by Mrs. Bert Stancliffe and lecturer Dee Hendrickson, honoring the pioneers of southern Oregon, to be held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m. in Phoenix Grange hall and will be open to the public. The sons and daughters of the early pioneers are invit ed to attend and wear, if pos sible, any early day clothing they have saved through the years. Grange members are asked to wear pioneer -type costumes. A fashion show will be presented by Mrs. Stan cliffe as part of the entertain ment. Other numbers will in clude square dancing by Chris Wolff and the "Black lighters" quartet singing with Vaughn Quackenbush and members of his group. Fea tured will be sketches of Ore gon history and introduction of guests. A display table with Mrs. Olin Poe in charge will take care of historical articles. Members and guests are ask ed to bring their keepsakes pertaining to pioneer days. Please use 'cards with name and data attached. Pioneer refreshments will be served. Chairman in charge will be Mrs. Mervin Hixson. officers for the second semes ter. It was also decided to award club members a book of their choice for the year's work. Library "members do bulletin board work, both in the library and in the various classrooms. The Junior Quill will pub lish its third issue next Fri day, Joel Gregory and Lois Stedman are coeditors. "Gypsy Troubadour" is the title of this year's operetta to be produced by the music de partment later this year. Ray Lewis has announced. Don Darneille, speech instructor, works with Ray Lewis on casting and directing. Casting will take place later this month.
