Red Raiders Humble Mountaineers 80-65 La Grande - Gordon Can gan sparked the Southern Oregon college Red Raiders of the Rogue here Friday night as they subdued the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers 80 to 65 and stayed in the thick of the running for the Oregon Collegiate conference basketball diadem. Carrigan made 11 of 19 field bucket attempts and all six of his free toss tries for 28 Viks Down OTI 73-64 Portland (UK) Portland State defeated Oregon Tech, 73-64, in an Oregon Colleg iate conference basketball game here Friday night. Portland State was in front 37-34, at halftime. Bernie Jones and Johnny Winters of Portland State were high scorers of the game with 16 points apiece. Norm Oliva was high man for OTI with 15 points. VARSITIES CLASH Roosevelt turned down Jackson 36 to 8 and Wash ington subdued Jefferson 25 to 20 Friday In city grade school National league varsity basketball games. In the American cir cuit Lincoln nicked Oak Grove 30 to 29 and Hoover beat Washington 24 to 15. points. He put in six of the fielders from the outside and hit the others at closer range. Southern Oregon took an early lead in the fracas, EOC caught up at 15-all then Car rigan hit a shot to give the Raiders the front-running spot for keeps. Halftime score was 36 to 31. The Raiders and Mounties were even on the backboards but the Southerners parlayed an edge in hustle and their hotter shooting into victory. SOC shot 35 of 75 for .466 av erage from the fiald. Mountie effort was 27 of 78 for .346. Dave D'Olivo put in 17 points and Punk Biddington 15 for SOC and Tom Neel 15 for the Mountaneers. Neel was charged with three per sonal fouls and a technical in fraction in the first five min utes of play. County AAU Hoop Fray Scheduled A team of mostly ex-college athletes, some of whom are coaches, will play Hawk inson Tire Tread Service Wed nesday night in a Jackson County AAU basketball play off. Which gym will be the scene of the game was still uncertain yesterday. Winner will meet Christie's Silver Dollar of Grants Pass in a valley play-off on Sunday, Feb. 15 at Southern Oregon college. The Sunday victor will advance against the Coos Douglas county champ for the right to enter the state meet. Hawkinson's has been play ing in the Southern Oregon Independent league and the Ex-Collegeians have had a pick-up schedule. Former Southern Oregon college players predominate on the Ex-Collegeian squad. Among these are Keith John son, Bill Hollingswarth, Lloyd Hoffine, Dale Bates, Dale Newton, Chuck Crandall and Leon Keith. Also on the club are Gene Helm and Don Spin as, ex-University of Oregon, Dennis Conner, now attending SOC, and Ron Van Dolah, ex Linfield college. Crandall is coach of the SO college junior varsity, Hoffine and Van Dolah at Crater high, Helm and Bates at McLough- lin Junior high, and Johnson and Spinas at Central Point Junior high. Hollmgsworth is still enrolled at SOC. On the Hawkinson roster are a numoer oi ex-nign school players from Medford, Phoenix and Jacksonville. City Bowling Meet Rivalry Continues Second Sunday of conten tion is slated' today in the annual men's city tournament at Medford Bowling lanes. Entries in the Medford Bowling association event will be out to better the top marks . established last week end. C. H. Barrell topped sin gles with 676 and Gale Guly and Frank Martin doubles with 1285. More team rivalry is billed for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. (UPD Gene Littler rapped in a 35-foot putt for an eagle on the last hole Saturday to record a 3-under- par 67 and up his lead over the field to five strokes at the end of 54 holes in the $17,500 Phoenix Open Golf tournament. The Ducks slowed down Slats Gill's Beavers in the opening minutes of the first half with a zone defense and barged in front, 20-7. The Beavers retaliated with a press and were able to nar row the margin to 32-29 at halftime. However, Oregon came back to go nine points in front again 38-29 in the second half and Oregon State got no closer than two points near the end of the game. Fouls Tell Fouls were the telling fac tor as Oregon State commit ted 26 infractions - eight more than the Ducks. Oregon State had more field ' goals but Oregon con verted 25 points from the foul line to only 14 for the Beavers. Lee Harman, all-coast can didate for OSC, led all scor ers with 23 points. Humphrey Ties The Cougars of IV were in front 16 to 11 at the quar ter but- Glendale was ahead 29 to 26 at halftime and 36 to 34 at the three-fourths break. IV got on top in the final quarter but two free shots by George Humphreys tied the mix and sent it into overtime. Bud Smart had 19 points for Glendale and Dan Slanaker 13 for the Cougars. Turner zipped in 17 field goals and made four of six free heaves for the Eagles who had margins of 20 to 10, 35 to 22 and 56 to 44 at the quarters. Central Point eighth top ped the Cavekid eighth 32 to 29 and the Pointers won the seventh grade skirmish 35 to 18. Crater's Comet club came up to a 36-all standing in the fourth stanza after lagging in other quarters. Period advan tages for North GP were 9 to 3, 23 to 16 and 32 to 29. Bob Christie paced the Crater offense with 17 markers and Ausland shot 12 for GP. Ron Beman was a Comet cog with his rebounding and work on offense. Central Point eighth held GP to just two points in the first quarter but gained only that many itself in the last chukker. Quarter counters for the Pointers were 13 to 2, 23 to 9 and 30 to 22. Mike Watkins had 11 points and Mike Glines 10 for Central Point and Louis Bonzan 11 for Grants Pass. Central Point took Gold Hill 15-7, 13-15, 15-13 and the Y'Ettes defeated the Y'Nots 15-3, 15-13. Eagle Point over came the Crater girls 12-15, 18-16, 15-11.
