Calif. - (tPD -Georga Matthews, 94, has aikd th court to sptcd up his request for a diyorce that would end his mar riage of SVi years. Matthews told Judge Chris B. Fox, "I want to liTe my last few years on earth in peace." 0iOD 0 In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS The news as this is written is a mishmash that perhaps reflects more or less accurate ly the state of the modern world. Here is an example: An ordinance which would make it legal for 18-year-olds to SMOKE in Portland was proposed by ' Mayor Terry Schrunk. It is now illegal for anyone under 21 to buy or smoke cigarettes or other tobacco in the city. IN Salem, the Oregon legis lature is considering a similar bill which would low er the smoking age from 18 to 16. HMMMMMMM. The reasoning seems to be that they're going to do it anyway, so we might as well make it legal. IN a police station in San Antonio (Texas) Officer Thomas Fenley was holding down the desk. The telephone rang. He answered it. An ex cited feminine voice at the other end of the line reported that something supernatural was going on at her house and to GET OUT HERE QUICK. He got there quick. The lady reported that after her husband had left for work she was sitting at the break fast table finishing her cof fee. Suddenly, she said, a round white object leaped into action. It jumped into her cup. Then it jumped out. It hippity-hopped around the kitchen and then hid behind the refrigerator. It was still making strange noises there. OFFICER Fenley could heir the noises, so he went af er the intruder. It turned out to be a golf ball her husband had left on the table. It had suddenly come loose at the seams. The tightly wound rubber center was popping out through a break in the cover. Every pop caused a bounce. Such is the life of a police man. SECRETARY Dulles is head ing for Europe again presumably in an effort to get our allies together in some sort of a counter-proposal to Russia on the German problem. It promises to be something of a job. France's De Gaulle opposes ANY kind of meeting with the Russkies before May 27. Britain is reported to oppose another airlift or any ramming through of sup plies if Berlin should again be blockaded. - The dispatches report: "The situation facing Dulles adds up to everybody being sure WHAT HE IS AGAINST, but nobody being sure what he is FOR." ' That's a common situation .these days. TN conclusion: a- President Eisenhower, In a breakfast meeting for "freshmen" GOP congress men, defines his philosophy of government as. "an effort to find a common ground for all Americans." . I'm sorry to have to say it, sir, but I'm afraid it can't be done. In these days, we all seem to prefer ARGUMENT to agreement. Actor Pleads Guilty To Drunken Driving Malibu, Calif. (UPD - Actor Barry Sullivan changed his innocent plea to guilty in a drunk driving charge and paid a $263 fine, court records revealed today.
