A MAIL TRIBUNE, Madforo, Oreeon, Tkurtaar, February 5, H3 $9,082 Grant Made For Lignin Research Corvallis-A grant of $9,082 for basic research on wood lignin has been received by Oregon's forest research cen ter in Corvallis, according to R. M. Kallander, administra tor. The money was granted by the Louis W. and Maud Hill Family Foundation of Saint Paul, Minn., to help support work of two wood chemists in a study of lignin from red alder. Lignin is a major bypro duct of wood pulp and paper making. About a fifth of wood is lignin, most of which is lost in spent solution result ing from the breakdown of chips into pulp. The thousands of 'tons of lignin lost annually in the United States are a potential source of valuable chemicals. Increased knowledge of lignin structure can open the way to recover these lost values. .Red alder was chosen for study because lignin of this hardwood is considered easier to recover than that of soft woods. This tree is being pulped in increasing amount in Oregon. Tribima RADIO PROGRAMS THURSDAY boiew arc wtwwd front Mm rod! stations and fha Mail M responsibility accept to malt changes as ar supplisa. He said that a man of this type must face the fact that in a few cases no amount of treatment will make the Was- sermann test turn absolutely negative. Under such circumstances the man should quit taking treatment. But my correspond ent could not accept this ex pert advice; he still went about worrying, and hunting for a doctor who would treat him strenuously. Now, the un happy man says, "I can't af ford all these 'shots'; so what am I to do?" All I can suggest is that he accept the advice of the nationally-known ex pert on this disease whom he saw in the big university clinic. Why go to a great ex pert if one is not going to take his advice? Is Mineral Oil Safe Laxative? Some people tell me they have been using mineral oil every night for years, and they say it worked well as. a laxative. Now they want to know why, after it has work ed so well for months or years, it has begun to come through .all by , itself, some times to soil their clothes. I don't know. Usually, I think the oil works best in the form of an emulsion. It is' less like ly, then, to come through the bowel unmixed with the feces. Some people get alarmed when, they are told that the mineral oil eventually will injure them in some way. I once looked up the literature on this subject for some med ical group, and although I found that in animals a small amount of the oil gets through the bowel wall, and remains in tome lymph nodes and in the liver, I could not find any information to show that this oil ever did the person harm.
