JIT f ' '' 2 Dfj- wizrrf BOAT SHOW AT COW PALACE Pretty June Adler, queen of the 15th annual San Francisco Sports & Boat Show, looks through a life-saver announcing the dates the show will be open. This boat show, the largest of its kind west of Chicago, will have a 10-day engagement at the Cow Palace in San Francisco and is expected to draw more than a quarter of a million people. Olga G. - His parents are biased. Howard G. - They just don't see her point of view. Olga G. I was married sev eral months ago to a man of a different faith from mine. Both sets of parents objected at first, but they finally ac cepted things when they saw we were determined to mar ry. My husband shows no in terest at all in knowing about my faith, but I am greatly in terested in his. I have always felt that basically we all wor ship one God and there shouldn't be differences be tween us. I want to under stand what makes his faith different from mine. When I question my hus band about this, he tells me he was never interested in things of this sort or he gives me answers that just don't jibe. His parents' answers are also very confusing and vague. Recently when I try to discuss these things with them they clam up as though I am treading on forbidden ground. I feel that they are biased and not open to fair and reasonable discussion. Howard G. I suppose it's a fault, but I just never could be much interested in reli gion. That's why I thought I could marry out of my faith without religion entering in the picture. Instead, it seems to be getting more important all the time. Olga seems to want to talk religion by the hour and I don't have either the interest or the inclination. My folks feel the same way. Sometimes Olga's questions confuse them. They just don't see her point of view at all. When we visit Olga's par ents the religious question never even comes up, so I don't see why it has to be discussed with my parents. We have agreed to bring up our children with some knowl edge of both faiths. When they are old enough they can Senate Approves Temporary Judges Salem (DPD A bill allow Ing appointment of circuit court judges and retired judges to serve temporarily with the Oregon Supreme Court passed the Senate Wed nesday. Olga says she'll have to know about my faith in order to teach the children, but I think they can learn at a religious school. . The Council: Although she likes to think of herself as being open - minded, Olga shows that she has some very definite views about religion. She believes that there "shouldn't be differences," yet the differences exist. Olga should be aware that she may not simply be seek ing information, as she so in nocently puts it. We strongly suspect that she is seeking justifications for her particu lar point of view. It is quite possible that, in a disguised form, she is actually prosely tizing for her own religion. If there are no real differences between their faiths, why shouldn't her husband belong to hers? This may be her underlying, even unconscious reasoning. We deduce this from the re action of Howard and his par ents to her questioning. Since she has been accepted into the family, it is more than likely that they would want her to have some knowledge j of their traditions. If they "clam up" or reply in vague terms, it is possible they have a fleeting suspicion that they are being baited. There is no law against proselytizing and certainly many persons have found new life and happiness because of it, but we believe that mis sionaries should be honest with themselves and others. They should speak up for their own faiths, not bait others about their beliefs. If Olga's primary aim were to establish a happy marriage and family life, we think that she would avoid subjects that are evidently painful to her husband and his family. (Copyright 1959.
