14 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thgrtdjy, January 29, 1959 Cil Industry To Pass Taxes On .Los Angele&-fl.PB-A spokes man for the oil and gas in dustry warned today that Gov. Edmund G. Brown's pro posed tax on the oil industry -ould be passed on to the con sumer. Felix Chappellett, general manager of the Western Oil and Gas association, said a state severance tax on oil and gas production would in crease taxes on motorists and cost of residential gas. "This is a tax on the con sumer - not a tax on the oil industry " he said. "A basic fact of life is that all taxes must be passed on, one way or the other, and the con sumer pays them all. "If a severance tax is add mA tn the taxes already levied on oil production in Cali fornia, the total tax will be completely out of line witn th tax in other oil producing states where there are sever ance taxes." Chappellett said property tavos in those states - Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma - wre lower or non-existant He said oil taxes in this sUte now are comparable or higher than in those states.
