Calif. -UPD- Gary Alcorn, Fresno State's star center who has been drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers, enjoys being a spoiler on the basketball court. "We play a lot of zone de fense which allows me to bang loose under the other team's basket and block their shots," explains Gary, "I pre fer keeping opponents from sinkinz baskets even more than scoring myself." The 22-year-old senior ad mits his six foot, nine inch height is his biggest asset. He can bat down quite a few balls by jumping 11 feet, six inches a foot and a half hieher than the basket. But being tall isn't enough nowadays to be a good basket ball player. Gary contends "A hig fellow has to have speed and endurance because the game is getting faster and faster" he says. "For in stance, the small guy is al ways trying to run and tire me out but I'm in good shape." Lifts Weights Gary keeps in condition by constant practice from Sep tember into March. He also lifts weights and does a lot of running in the first part of the season. Last summer he went through a real toughening ses sion, operating a jack hammer and digging ditches. "The main thing is your legs," he says. "If they are strong you can go in basket ball." While he believes defense is getting more important in the snort. Alcorn doesn t tninK that high scoring games will decrease as there are too many good offensive players around. However, he does think the demand will in crease for two-way men. "If I can score more points than the player I am guard ing, I figure I am doing my job," he explains. "I've scored between 15 and 16 points per game in the 16 we've had so fat thi spawn which ISn t bad for a defensive player." Good Jump Shot His best shot is a jump anywhere inward from the free throw line. Alcorn will report to the Lakers next Sept. 1 and in tends to play AAU ball if he doesn't make the grade in the NBA. A business administration major, Gary plans to open a sporting goods store after hanging up his uniform for good. However, it probably will be some time before that happens in view of his past performances. During the 1956-57 season when Fresno State was in the old Califor nia Basketball association, he led the loop by scoring 322 points and sinking 132 field goals. His fine defensive play, mixed with steady offense, has been a big factor in the California Collegiate Athletic association since Fresno came into it. Both had losing records last year. Sanford, who was a sensation with the Phillies as a rookie in 1957, finished with a 10-13 record the fol lowing year while batting a weight problem. Muffett was 4-6 in his second year at St. Louis. "I'm looking for Jack to bounce back to his 1957 form when he won 19 and lost eight," Manager Bill Rigney said recently. "He could work 250 innings." Muffett shapes up as a late1 inning reliever. He came to the club in exchange for hurl ers Ernie Broglio and Marv Grissom.
