WHY VAKE UP Triple Crown the World Championship, National Senior Title, and the North American Championship. Looking ahead, there is the 1960 Olym pics at Squaw Valley, Calif., where she will be striving for her first Olympic gold medal. After that, perhaps Hollywood, television, and professional ice shows. In the 1956 Olympics at Cortina, Italy, when only 16, she won a silver medal as runner-up to Tenley Albright, four years older than Carol and now retired. Later that same Winter Miss Heiss re taliated by winning the World's title from Miss Albright in Germany. A reported feud between the two girls, blown up out of proportion in some news papers, broke out at this meet It had something to do with Carol acting "swell headed" about her victory. Most members of the press find Carol an easy-to-talk-to, poised little charmer who impressed everyone, including the Rus sians, with her personality. Of Miss Albright, Carol says, "I miss the competition with her. I think our rivalry was good for skating, because people seemed more interested when we were competing. In spite of what you may have read, we really got along very well." Carol had other troubles that Winter. She was subjected to criticism because she stayed with her mother at a hotel other than the one the American squad additional pupils from wealthy families. "The most coachable pupil I've ever had. A real joy to work with. Never stops trying to learn," Brunet says. Unlike many athletes who gradually work up to a short peak period, Carol says she reaches a peak each year after about five weeks of work and maintains that level for six or seven months by skating three to four hours a day. "There are many good young skaters coming along now who are really tough by the time they are 19," Carol says. "The 18-21 age bracket is where you find the best. I think by the time you hit 24 your skill in skating is not the same, although Sonja Henie competed until she was 29. I hope to keep going until I'm 26." Paying proper respect to the great Sonja, who won three Olympic titles along with other honors, Carol figures she has a way to go to catch up with her. "I really think it's harder now that I'm on top than it was when I was trying to get there," Carol says. "People still wish you luck, but now they say you don't need it. You're more alone." Since Carol is sheer poetry in motion on ice, it was startling to hear that she gets butterflies before every performance. She has even been known to make an occasional slip, but like a great champion she quickly recovers. What Carol never tried to ex plain was that she wanted to stay close to her mother, who was critically ill. Her mother died shortly after, at 42. one had guided Carol every step of the way, even working as a commercial artist to help pay skating expenses. In its strange way, tragedy made closer rapport between Carol and her French Jm coach, Pierre Brunet Pierre, former Olympic dance-skating champ, and his "e, Andree, winner of two Olympic dance titles, had one child, Jean Pierre, ine son seemed on his way to repeating hls Parents' Olympic glory and was good enough to beat Dick Button, later the worlds champ, when both were 16. "My brother Bruce, 15, "and sister Nancy, 17, are championship quality skaters. We know none is perfect; so if I sound off about a jump I thought was great, they bring me down to earth." Before her mother died, Carol promised she would remain an amateur throughout her college career and the 1960 Olympics, where she has vowed she will win a gold medal. She will be a college senior then. Concerning the future, she will wait until after the Olympics. Right now she doesn't know whether it will be more amateur competition or the start of a professional career. Part of all her plans, of course, are the ultimate ones for mar riage and children. People constantly ask Carol what she will be doing in two years, but she has a stopper for this question. She asks them what they will be doing in two years.
