... I wish i hadn't had that last cup of coffee. It
would have been better, too, if I'd come home a little
sooner. It must be almost midnight.
Oh, well, I'll probably go straight to sleep . . .
Maybe I'd better turn over on my side. Ouch! How
could my arm be so uncomfortable? Don't I always
sleep on this side? Maybe it's the other side . . .
The bed is certainly scratchy tonight. Where did I
see a sale on sheets and pillowcases? Maybe it was last
week. I'll look in the paper when I get up. Oh, no, I
won't. I remember burning the papers before I left
tonight ...
It must be past midnight now. I wonder what time
it is. If I roll over and get the light from the window,
maybe I can see my watch . . . There. No, the moon's
behind a cloud. Is it five minutes after 12? It can't be
one o'clock already, can it?
This is ridiculous. I'm going to sleep. There are a
million things to be done tomorrow. If I don't get to
sleep, I'll never ...
Did I turn off the light in the kitchen? Of course I
did. I never left the kitchen light on in my life . . .
For heaven's sake! Heaven . . . The best music this
side of heaven. That's Guy Lombardo. He has five
brothers, I think, and a sister. The sister's name is
Rosemary.
Rosemary . . . Nice name. Rosemary Evans married
that man who used to be general manager of the awning
company. What was his name?
Who cares? Me. That's who.
Well, let's see. Roger? No . . . Robert? Maybe. Robert
who? Mr. and Mrs. Robert Who . . .
This is silly. Good-night, world. Good-night, mice.
Mice! If that noise is a mouse, I'll scream. Gloria
Olson woke up one night and found a mouse sitting on
her stomach. She didn't scream.
There it is again. If I turn on the light, I'll never get
to sleep ...
Gloria said she never shut her eyes again all night.
Gloria's a pretty name. Like Rosemary. Rosemary
Evans Somebody.
Okay. I give up. I'm going straight downstairs and
drink nine cups of coffee ...
And then I'm going to take an ax and break every
clock in the house.
I'll never speak to Rosemary Evans again. So help
me . . . help me
Help!
