Senior Citizens to Organize Decisions Group at Center The Rogue Valley Council on Aging Thursday decided to add a Great Decisions dis cussion group to the present schedule of the Senior Activ ity Center, Frank Glonning, chairman of the group, an nounced. The new discussion and re view period will begin Mon day, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m., under the leadership of Mrs. C. A. Thatcher and Mrs. H. P. Bos worth. It will meet at the Ac tivity Center on Jackson st. and Hawthorne ave. Plans are being made for meetings of especial interest built around that portion of the Decisions program focus ing attention on the issues now confronting Oregon. Pic tures of early days in Med ford will be shown. Great Decisions . . . 1959 gives the citizen an opportun ity to inform himself and dis cuss intelligently the prob lems of foreign policy. Other Classes Other classes of interest in the schedule are oil painting, on Tuesday, from 1 to 3 p.m., Miss Margaret Osenbrugge, instructor: woodcarving and clay-modelling, ' Wednesday, from 1 to 3 p.m.. Glen Van Wickle, instructor; interme diate dancing, from 10 a.m. to noon, James Forbes, instruc tor. , The Center is also open Thursday afternoon and Fri day afternoon for cards, reading and visiting. Volun teer hostesses on duty every day are Mrs. Judd Greenman, Mrs. Martha Gregory, Miss Gladys Eaton, Mrs. Ena Foss and Mrs. Clayton Walker, i Glonning reported that a committee to coordinate the Center was appointed and several new activities are be ing considered. Plans are be ing made for a shuffleboard and travel slides will be shown as soon as adequate fa cilities are obtained. The pos sibilities of a Center orches tra are also being explored. Civil Service Exams Announced for Posts Examinations for profes sional engineer, staff nurse and head nurse have been an nounced by the civil service commission. Hadley Elected Head Of Dealers in Valley Maynard Hadley, owner of Desert Service station, Camp White, was elected president of the Rogue Valley Dealers association at a meeting last week. Other officers elected in clude Lee Coggins, Ashland Mobil dealer, secretary; and Dick Kay, Texaco dealer in Medford, treasurer. Adult Class Set At Rogue River Rogue River-An adult edu cation class on tailoring and problems of sewing will be held in the Rogue River ele mentary school starting the week of Feb. 2. . The class is being spon sored by the state department of education with Mrs. Orma Farnum instructor. The class probably will meet for six hours one day a week, and the day and ar rangement of hours will be determined by the wishes of those who enroll. Holiday Magazine Has Article on West Coast Robert Carson, Los Ange les novelist and motion pic ture writer, is author of an article in the February issue of Holiday magazine in which the Oregon coast is discussed. Carson, who praised the beauty of the Oregon coast, said it is ideal for motoring tourists who want, diversion, lovely ' scenery, interesting cities and good food. The Medford dentist was one of two dentists who ac tively participated in organi zation and staffing the Jack son county children's ' dental clinic, and has been active in the United Medford Crusade. Other activities include being the Jackson county represen tative of the state committee on public assistance dental care program, and a member of the official board, finance commission and usher at the First Methodist church. President of Association He is president of the South ern Oregon District Dental association which includes Jackson and Josephine coun ties, treasurer of the Metho dist Men, and is active in Scottish Rite Masonry. He was appointed to the Oregon state board of dental examiners. Stathos, who has a bachelor of arts degree from Oregon State college, is a member of the finance committee of Grif fin Creek school, a solicitor for the United Medford Crus ade, chairman of the Jackson County Republican Central committee, a member of the Medford Safety Council, the Keep Oregon Green associa tion, and the Crater Lions club. He also is a member of the First Methodist church. He was chairman of the Youth of Ike-Nixon commit tee here, chairman of the Young Republicans and chair man of the county GOP cen tral committee. Stathos started his insur ance agency in Medford in 1955, coming here from Cor vallis where he started in the insurance business while at tending college. DR. JOHN P. DONALD STATHOS Crater Lions Nominee Assets, Sayings Show Increase in First Federal First Federal Savings and Loan association, Medford, noted gains in assets, savings and home mortgage loans dur ing the past year, Robert F. Kyle, manager, reported to stockholders recently. Assets of the institution showed an increase of S507, 417.41, or 13.9 per cent for a total of $4,154,745.97, he said. The association made 181 loans for a total of $1,514, 117.78 during 1958, he point ed out, a gain of 13.5 per cent over the end of 1957. The loans last year brought to a total $3,593,883.33 the amount in home mortgage loans, he said. Kyle said "of special signi ficance is the fact that our home loan activities held up and even increased in 1958 despite the tendency of many consumers to reduce their purchases." The association strengthen ed its reserves to $277,469.46, an ii-rease of 10 per cent ov er 1957, he noted. "Stable to rising employ ment, slightly higher consum-; er inoome and increased con- j fidence in the economy should i serve to stimulate the flow of j savings into our institution and expand the demand for ; stockholders. The association would con tinue to make available to the community the maximum amount of home financing funds permitted by law, he said. Officers of the association are Herbert G. MA1L.TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Sunday, January 25, 1959 3 80 Disease Cases Reported Last Week A total of 80 cases of com municable diseases were re ported to the Jackson county health department last week, according to Dr. A. Erin Mer kel, public health physician. Twenty-eight cases were influenza, 17 of them in Med ford. Five influenza cases were reported in Central Point, and three each in the Shady Cove and Ashland. Eleven cases of pneumonia, six in Medford, were report ed. Other pneumonia cases were reported in Eagle Point, 2, and Shady Cove, Jackson ville and Phoenix, 1 each. Other communicable dis eases were scarlet fever, Cen tral Point 1; measles, Med ford 3, Ashland 2, Eagle Point 1; whooping cough, Central Point 1, Medford 1; strep throat, Butte Jalls 4, Shady Cove 2, and Ashland 1; infec tious hepatitis. Central Point 2; German measles, Central Point 12, Medford 3, Ashland 3; chicken pox, Medford 2, Central Point 2; and mumps, Medford 1.
