January 25, 1939 Small Worlds J$ Around Us I isEi By Lynn M Watkins Portuguese Man-O-War: A Little Fairy Boat Sophisticated folks ill laugh derisively at the state ment that there really are little fairy boats that sail the seas. Maybe it's silly, but the Portuguese man-o-war is real, and its story, what is known of it, comes about as close to being a fairy tale as any. To begin with, this creature is not a jelly-fish as most peo ple believe. Neither is it a single animal. Actually, it is a little pommunity of animals; a colony of polyps, living to- ' gether for their common good. Each polyp has its own function and contributes its bit to the whole. These dis tinct and separate animals form the crew of this eternal little sailing craft that bobs majestically over the waves of a tropical sea, sailing a prescribed course and with the ability to come up into the wind or slack off its sail and run with it. Bladder for Sail The "sail" of this little ship is a translucent, elongated bladder, filled with gas and brilliantly colored with blue or crimson, delicately shaded with rosy tints, like the edge of a summer sunset. On clear, sunny days, when the warm waters of tropic seas are calm, thousands of these tiny "sails" can be seen from the deck of a boat, bobbing gent ly with the surge of the waves and drifting with the wind. Each "sail" is from four to six inches long and stands about the same height above the water's surface. Of the thousands that may be within sight at a time, a careful ob server notices that they are not all going the same direc tion. Some may be quartering against the wind or coming up into it. " Forgetting for a moment that the "crew" of the tiny craft is sailing the direction they have decided on, the unromantic scientist says the Portuguese man-o-war has dropped down the long ten tacles that are attached to the under part of the "sail" and their weight causes the little ship to "come about." ItiaV lCHlttviCST ' hang several feet down from the bladder. nrler direct con trol of the "animal" and can be lowered or retracted, ai their maximum extension they act much the same as a sea-anchor does for a real boat and like a sea-anchor they keep the man-o-war from drifting too rapidly or may even prevent it from being washed ashore in a heavy blow. The "mouth" or more rightly the "absorb er is on tne unaersiae 01 tne bladder or sail. In the curtain formed by these tentacles, or streamers, lives a tiny tropical fish known as the Portuguese man-o-war fish. He is usually dangerous net of stinging complacent calm. Probably he acts as a natural lure to at tract other small fish within reach of the stinging cells. In payment for his services he gets the crumbs that fall Florist Startled By Bouquet Request Glendale, Calif.
