A test was given on the chart an refreshments followed. Officers of the club are Greg Goodrich, president; Sam James, vice president: Terry Welburn, treasurer and secretary; and David Doolen, reporter. Merle Cook and V. L. Goodrich are leaders. The meeting was held at the home of Greg Goodrich. David Doolen, Reporter Ride in Little Devil Jet Helicopter Found Not Like Sitting in Easy Chair B7 WILLIAM TERRY Moffett NAS, Calif.-TOPD-If you would like to be a human yo-yo, come along for a ride on a Little Devil jet helicop ter. The newest In "choppers" can shoot upward at 100 feet a second and perform a St. Vitus dance in the sky.' One moment you are on the ground nodding to the mechanic at takeoff. The next second you are peering down at his tiny figure on the run way. Your stomach catches up several seconds later. I boarded the "Djinn" (French for Little Devil) at the National Helicopter as sociation of America Conven tion. The 17-foot, half-ton 81-mile-an-hour rotor craft isn't much bigger than a living room divan. No Easy Chair Rid But pilot Jack Crosthwait, a 26-year-old ex-Marine, didn't go for an easy chair ride. He wanted to show me how the bird really performed. The mechanic who gave us the lift-off signal rapidly re ceded to doll-like size, as we zoomed straight up at 6,000 feet a minute. Then Crosthwait made the Little Devid dance around the sky. From the ground we must have resembled a whirl ing dervish. We bobbed and bounced un til Crosthwait turned off the power to show he could main tain control without power. The Little Devil plummet ed, caught as Crosthwait cut In the power then went Problems of Plaza Area Are Discussed Ashland Problems con nected with revitajization of the Plaza area of Ashland were discussed at a meeting of the Plaza Promoters this week. ,' The group expressed deter mination to make the Lithia park entrance and approach ing streets more attractive to tourists and townspeople. Eldon Scripter, ! chairman, pointed out that a new quarter-million-dollar Shakespear ean Festival theater will be constructed, and said that sur rounding buildings 'and scenic background could be un proved. Suggestions ofiproject ranged from removal of obso lete buildings and erection of better directional; signs, to moving all city offices into the city hall and) erecting a tourist information house at the Plaza center. Much of the discussion cen tered around .the tendency of businesses and residences moving in a southerly direc tion. ! straight backwards A minute later, he swung around the tail in a lighting motion, darted down to grass- top level, swung around again and settled on the ground gently as a falling leaf. Garden Sprinkler Principal The principal that makes the Little Devil fly is simple. Hot-air from the jet pipe is blown through the hollow blades and lout of slits in the ends, causing them to rotate. It's similar to the idea behind garden sprinklers The craft was designed by Sud Aviation of France. It is in production for the French Army. In this country Re public Aviation markets the two-passenger birds for a var iety of uses. Eventually, per haps, for businessmen in more of a hurry than most com muters.
