The problem is my wife. She is ten years younger than I am and about twice as energetic. A few years ago after our youngest son left for college, she started a little business that has become quite successful. Nora now spends some 12 hours a day working for her business. I certainly think this is too much for a woman of her age. In any case, I want her to sell it this year so that she can make preparations for our trip next year. I want to take off as soon as I retire. But Nora seems reluctant. I had looked forward to enjoy ing this phase of our life to gether. .. Nora SRichard is so eager to retire that he can't begin Bis preparations fast enough. But I don't think there is any necessity to hurry like that. In the meantime I can take my time about looking around for a satisfactory buyer for my business. Richard just doesn't realize how hard it is for me to part with my business. I started on less than a shoestring and built it up into something really worthwhile. I had been a homemaker for 30 years, yet I found I was able to make the transition to busi ness-woman very successfully. I want to travel and loaf with Richard, but I wonder how I'll like it on a full-time basis. Besides, in spite of my husband's confidence, I doubt whether we'll be able to do much on qur retirement in The Council: As we size up this situation, Richard does understand very well how hard it will be for Nora to part with her business and that is why he is starting his campaign rather early. Advance planning, however, is no guarantee of successful retirement. The plans have to be right and we wonder whether Richard has thought this through as fully as he can. Loafing, travel and hobbies are great, but most individu als in physically good condi tion want something more in their lives. They like to feel that they are part of the activ ity of the present-day world even though their roles may be more subdued than at an earlier period. - In view of the fact that giving up her business would be a real sacrifice to Nora at this time, we think that Rich ard ' should give a little thought to taking some part in her business. If he spends the next year looking over all aspects of it, he may find a way of playing some minor role. This would relieve Nora of her heavy responsibilities and they would be able to lead a more balanced life of work and recreation together.
