53rd Year Medford Price 10 Cents Tribune 2nd SECTION MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1959 Pages 1 to 10 Progress Reported In Chemical Control Of Brush, Weeds Corvallis - Significant pro gress in chemical control of brush and weed trees on Wil lamette valley foothill lands has been reported by the Ore gon State college school of forestry. , ' Brush and weed tree en croachment on forest lands is greatly reducing the amount of wood grown in Northwest forests, surveys show. It is estimated that brush has re duced the productivity of more than one-fourth of the forest land of southwest Ore goo. In the OSC field tests, ef fective kills were achieved with 2(2,4,5-TP) on big-leaf maple, white oak, and thim bleberry, blackberry and pois on oak. Bigleaf maple and white oak are considered weed species although both produce useable wood. The market for them Is limited and a considerably larger vol ume of coniferous wood can generally be produced on the same land. Hobart B. Jones, now a for ester with the bureau of land management in Medford, worked on the project during the past two years while do ing advanced study at OSC. Dr. George Barnes, assistant director of the forest research division at the college, is in charge of the chemical con trol research program. Chemical brush control as a forest management tool is a comparatively recent develop ment, but shows great prom ise with continued research on new chemicals, application and plant reactions, Jones and Barnes said. OSC is now running tests on minimum doses to hold control costs as low as possible. Large bigleaf maple can be controlled with a spring basal application of 2(2,45-TP) with an oil carrier, tests showed. The chemical is used as a summer application with white oak. Among the more successful tests for white oak control are those in which the chemical is applied to axe frills - or diagonal cuts into the bark. Undiluted 2,4-D in amine form, applied in the spring to axe frills, also gives good results. Vine maple is a problem child still, tests show. Foliage reduction may be accomplish ed with aerial sprays of 2,4,5 T or 2(2,4,5-TP) but there is generally a re-sprouting at the base of the plant. The project is being conducted with the cooperation and aid of the bureau of land management. Portland -flJPD- An advisory committee on parole and pro bation has recommended in terim changes looking toward the time when Oregon has a jfull time parole board. Agronomy Property Inspected by Court The Jackson county court and Harold White, superin tendent of Southern Oregon Branch Experiment station, Tuesday afternoon inspected agronomy station property at Talent in preparation for an nouncing bids for its sale. The property was vacated after the Southern Oregon Branch experiment station staff moved into the facilities completed this fall on Hanley rd. Shop Destroyed by Fire in Lone Pine Area A shop at the rear of the Charles P. Chisum residence on Lone Pine rd. burned about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Firemen said the shop and its contents were considered a total loss. They reported that the blaze probably orig inated from electrical wiring. Comet Believed Falling Satellite Cambridge, Mass. -HIPD- A fiery comet was spotted in the Pacific Wednesday at the time and place predicted for the fall of America's giant Atlas satellite. The U.S. Naval base at Guam reported to Smithson ian Astrophysical observatory here that a "fiery red comet" was seen in the sky at 6:10 a.m. (p.s.t.) today. The report of another sight ing came from the cruiser Rochester, about half way be tween .Hawaii and Japan. The sightings coincided with predictions by Smithson ian consultant Dr.. George Veis. The observatory would not say positively that the comet seen today was the At las, but only that Veis had predicted it would fall in the Pacific today.
