Harman is having a tre mendous season and already has been acclaimed the top backcourt man in the West by some. He also plays under the basket and in the key hole almost as effectively de spite his lack of height. Backbone of OSC Attack Harman, a kid whose only fault was that he used to get angry at himself, has practi cally carried Oregon State on his back so far. The 21 - year - old athlete came here four years ago from University High at Los An geles where he was player of the year in prep circles, He didn't play freshman bas ketball. Instead, he joined an AAU team composed of mem bers of Oregon State's 1955 Pacific Coast conference champions. . In his first two varsity sea sons, the potential was there but Harman didn't quite at tain greatness. Last season, playing in the shadow of Gambee, Lee scored 173 points in 26 games. In his first 13 games this season he scored 201 points for a 15.5 average. He's the only man on the team with an average of 10 points per game or better, He's hit approximately 43 per cent of his field goals. "He works under the boards like someone four or five inches taller," Gill says. "His defense is good, he dribbles well and few can pass as well as he does. He can play any one of several positions." -Harman's greatest perform ance came in December against Iowa during the finals of the "Far West Classic" here. Shooting from every position, he poured in 33 points-his highest so far-as Oregon State won a close one. lAse wiu be in action again' tws week when Oregon State playsat Idaho Thursday night and Washington State Friday. "If it wasn't for him, we could not have beaten Santa Clara last Friday." . Coach Phil Woolpert of UFS joined the rest. of the Dons in hoping that Fred La- Cour, the stylish forward who ran into grade trouble, would be able to pass his exams and rejoin the squad. Michigan State Ties For First United Press International Inability to crack a zone defense cost Michigan States its only defeat in the Big Ten so far this season, but the Green-led, green-clad Spar tans seem to have overcome that fault and now are tied for the loop lead. The Spartans gained that first-place tie Monday night when jumping Johnny Green popped in 21 points to pace a 8Z-77 victory over unio State. Michigan State's only loss In four . league games thus far came when the, Spartans ran into Iowa's rugged zone defense. Ohio State tried the same tactic Monday night, but sharp Spartan shooting "broke the zone" and the Buckeyes were forced back into a man-to-man defense Ohio State fought the Spar tans on even terms for 11 minutes but then Michigan State broke out of a 20-20 tie and went roaring to a 51-39 halftime lead that put the game on ice. Larry Siegfried paced the losing Buckeyes with 20 points. . ' Minnesota clung to the tie for the lead by beating 15th- ranked Northwestern, 71-67 in a road game, the third straight loss for Northwest ern. Soph Paul Lehman scor ed 22 for Minnesota. Willie Jones had 24 for Northwest ern but Wildcat ace Joe Ruk- lick, who had averaged 23 points per game, was held to five. Tornado Eyes Opportunity Butte Falls plays at Jack sonville high and St. Mary's meets Talent in Medford this evening in Jackson County B league basketball games . Medford High school's bas ketball team has' the oppor tunity this week to take over its first 1959 lone leadership in the Southern Oregon con ference. But to do it the Black Tornado must accomplish what over the years has been reparded the toughest job in the loop defeat Klamath Clambake Renamed Whale Roast Pebble Beach, Calif. (UPD Roll the National Open, the Masters and National Amateur all into one and, as far as westerners are concerned, at least, it comes out the Bing Crosby , National Pro-Amateur Golf Tournament. What started out 18 years ago as a Crosby "fun tourna ment" and was more recently called "Crosby's Clambake," has developed into one of the most important tournaments in the country. In fact, it has grown so large that Bing has rechristen ed it the "Crosby Whale Roast." Larry Crosby, Bing's broth er, estimated that the cash taken in would top $90,000 and that with program sales and other concessions more than $100,000 would be turn ed over to charity. y Bing Pays All Expenses It is not generally known that Crosby, himself, picks up the check for all expenses. He puts up the $15,000 purse for the pro-amateur tourna ment. He arranged the TV contract to pay the additional $35,000 that went in the pro fessional division. He also takes care of all other costs in connection with the tourney. The result is that every nickel taken in at the gate goes to charities of the region. Art Bell, a San Francisco professional, was paired with Bob Roos, a one-handicapper from San Francisco, and they made a good run for the mon ey in the prp-amateur divi sion. By CASEY STENGEL Manager, New York Yankees (Written of UPI) . Glendale, Calif. -IUPD- The Yankees were a real good ball club when we closed the sea son and we're going into spring training with the team that won the world's cham pionship. If the team reports in good condition, I'd say we should get off to a good start. I feel a little more optimistic now than I did during August and September. At that, time I wouldn't have called our team one that rated to be called of cham pionsnip caliber. We were playing about .500 baseball and that's not good enough. cut tne way tney came through in the World Series showed that our men still had the ability and those are the men who will form the back bone of our 1959 team. People keep asking me what's the "big trade" the Yankees will make this year. And I keep telling them I Leadership in SO Loop Falls on its home court. If Medford can get the job done, then a win over Crater on the following night likely would be necessary to hang on to the front position. Arch Moore Gets Trophy Los Angeles -(DPD- Durable Archie Moore, the light heavy weight champion, has been awarded the George Blake trophy and the acclaim of the Southern California boxing writers for the greatest ring achievement in 1958. The veteran champion re ceived the award Monday night at the seventh annual dinner of the boxing writers. who hailed him for one of the great performances in boxing history when he got off the mat in Montreal to defeat Yvon Durelle, Another '. champion, Don Jordan, was given .the award as the fighter of the year for his upset victory over welter weight champion Virgil Ak- ins here last month. . Alvaro Gutierrez of Mexi co City and L. C. MEETS TOMMY BAIN - Houston, Tex. - (DPD - Paul Jorgenson, the world's sec ond - ranked featherweight, from Port Arthur, Texas, meets Tommy Bain of Holly wood, Calif., in a 10-round bout here Jan. 27. don't have any trading plans at the present time. We have made no deals since the sea son closed. That doesn't mean we won't make any. But I'll have to get together with general manager George Weiss and talk things over. Nobody is ever satisfied he has all the manpower he needs. But I think our pitch ing staff came through at the close of the season. After all, Bob Turley came through with 21 . wins that's some thing. And Whit ey Ford pitched eight shutouts that's something, too. You wouldn't have known it, but Ryne Duren was a crip ple during the World Series, Now that he has had his knee operation, we should be even better off in our relief depart ment. . And Don Larsen showed that his arm was capable of pitching World Series ball. Bobby Shantz had a crippled finger that bothered him last season, but he figures in our plans this year. And there was nothing wrong with the rest of the fellas, men like Tom Sturdivant, Johnny Kucks, Art Ditmar and the others. Everybody keeps asking me where I'm going to play El ston Howard. Let them wait until we go into action to find out. But you can be sure he'll be playing after the good year he had last season. And that Hank Bauer he had a big season. People talk about Mickey Mantle but they forget he led the league in homers. And I'm not selling Norm Siebern short. He's a good boy too. Our infield should be in fairly good shape with the likes of Gil McDougald, Bill Skowron, Tony Kubek, Andy Carey, Jerry Lumpe and some others. But the opposition should be stronger this year. Detroit should be helped by the addi tion of Don Mossi and Ray Narleski w'hile Billy Martin will boost Cleveland's chances. And don't forget those Red Sox. By adding Vic Wertz to such guys like Ted Williams, Jackie Jensen and Frank Malzone they helped themselves. All they need is a little pitching improvement and we'll all have our trou bles with them. Kapp Set For Award Palo Alto, Calif. -(DPD- Joe Kapp. star California quar terback, will receive the 10th annual Pop Warner Memorial award tonight at a dinner eiven by the Palo club.
