Hill, a rectal specialist at the Mayo Clinic, wrote that each year in this country some 10,000 people die of cancer of the rectum. A man (more of ten than a woman), often in his 50s or 60s will per haps become Dr Alvarea constipated for the first time in his life. He may begin to bleed from the bowel, or he may begin to have pain in his pelvis, or a feeling after his bowels move that there still , is some material left. With such symptoms he should have immediately in sisted on a physician's look ing into his rectum with a lighted, tube, but he did not know his danger, and hence nothing was done until it was too late. As Dr. Hill said, from 70 to 80 per cent of the cancers of the large bowel are in the rectum and the sigmoid seg ment which is just above the rectum; and in this region a lump or an ulcer can easily be seen. Often the cancer starts in what is called a "precancerous polyp", which may have been present for years. Such a polyp which looks sometimes like a mush room can be burned off with electric sparks, applied with an electrode which is passed down through the lighted tube. Oregon Mills Enjoy Bigger Market Portland -Bubbling with confidence, Oregon's green fir mills enjoyed a "frothy" market last week at rising prices, according to Crow's Lumber Market News Serv ice. The strength has con tinued to come from Califor nia, as a result of reduced freight rates which have en abled southern Oregon mills to enjoy part of that big- mar ket. Buying from the Mid west and East has been about what would be expected at this season, following snow and cold in the nation's mid section. Standard and better grade green fir dimension for Cali fornia is bringing the south ern Oregon mills $6 to $8 over what eastern buyers are willing to pay. Utility grade continues strong, also studs. Boards have moved up price wise in the Califonia maket. Kiln-drying mills ar also in a strong position. Low grade 2x4s have been active, , and wider widths of utility di mension have begun to move better. This segment of the business is not as zippy as the green department be cause California does not buy as much kiln-dried lumber as green. 5:05 TBA -530 Search for Scholarship 6:00 Weatner , 6 05 New 6:15 Dour Edwards 6:30 Name That Tune 7:00 Thi Texan 7 30 Father Knows Best 8:00 Dannv Thomas 830 Ann Sothern ' 9:00 Lowell Thomas High Ad venture -10:00 TBA 1030 News 115 Sign Off Waifs TV & Radio Service Oldest Shop in So. I'll never forget the day when a prominent man came a thousand miles to get one of, those "thorough examina tions" which he had heard about as being highly desir able for older persons. He had been taken care of by an able young physician who had reported that everything was all right. But he had forgotten to make a rectal examination. When this was made by a rectal specialist, there he found "three large precancerous polyps," as big as hazel-nuts. Fortunately, they could still be burned off with electric sparks, so the man did not have to have an operation. But, because of this little extra examination, his life was saved.
