Medford, handing the Cave men their first setback in the circuit, while scoring the third Tornado lood victory, rose in to a three-way first place deadlock with Grants Pass and with Klamath Falls which whacked Ashland 54 to 38 also on Friday. The tie was short-lived, however, for Klamath and GP were foes at Grants Pass last night while Medford drew, a bye. Medford, nevertheless was assured of second spot in the standings, only a half game out of first week after week end engagements. Grants Pass loomed tremen dous under the boards and moved the ball well in the opening moments. But the Black Tornado soon fired up in aggressiveness to outdo the Cavemen under the bas kets, work with hustle, punch, sharpness, and steadiness and fine teamwork on offense and play its best game .so far this season. Lowell Dean and Jerry An derson with 15 and 13 points, respectively, topped the Tor- Ski Reports Available By Phone Medford Business ex change has announced a daily ski report service. Anderson cleaned the glass for 17 rebounds and Koch had eight. John Olson tallied 12 markers for the Cavemen and Jerry Putnam cleared the backboard nine times. Medford stayed in front after taking the lead for the second time at 6 to 5 on a fast break bucket by Dean. The Tornado headed 11 to 7 at the quarter, stretched to one margin of nine points in the second period and led 25 to 19 at halftime. Grants Pass shortened its deficit to five points once in third stan za but Medford 'commanded 37 to 26 when the canto con cluded. Free Shot Battle . In the final panel, which was a lusterless battle of free shots, Medford led by never less than 10 counters and its widest frame was 17 points at 57 to 40. Grants Pass cause was hurt after 1V4 minutes of .play when 6-3 John Fox, a rugged player under the hoops for his team, suffered a knee injury. He returned with his knee taped up in the second quar ter but was unable' to move well and his stay was brief. The Cavemen lost Rex Ben ner in the late third quarter and Rick Sabin in the early fourth quarter on fouls. Benner put in the first three points of the ball game. Med ford caught ud on a long push by" Anderson and a free shot by Jerry Shultz. Anderson made it 4 to 3 for Medford but Benner came back for his second long jump for 5 to 4 GP. Dean got his pusher for 6 to 5 with 334 minutes to go in the quarter. Club Gets Lift Thp Medford five seemed to gain impetus in the late first canto with the entry of Js.ocn, ttnoth Deakins and Don Peek into the action of the tussle in the late third quarter. Rarkboard work by Koch, the floor, play of Peek and the steady work of Deakins eave the Pear City club a lift and, after a GP challenge, the Cavemen lost their sureness and Medford took control. Grants Pass cut a Medford lead of 15 to 10 down to 15 to 14 on a pair of buckets by Olson. Then Calvin Dean got two free markers, Lowell Dean two field buckets and Koch a rebound goal for 23 to 14. Koch added a jumper for Medford, Putnam put in one free noint and Olson two and Putnam drove in from the side for a bucket with 15 second left in the half for the 25 to 19 count. The main floor of the big building is automobiles representing some of the finest cars of this kind on the west coast. A good-sized crowd was on hand yesterday afternoon to examine the work of those who take great pride in alter ing the production-line auto mobile into a vehicle of great beauty. Among the show entries are three "Old Timers" from the collection : on Medford's Tucker Sno-Cat corpation. . Several of the cars on dis play belong to members of Southern Oregon Timing as sociation who are assisting manager Mike Batinich with the operation of the show. SOTA also has a display of the electronic timing equip ment they use at the drag races during the summer months. Judges will be considering the entries today and awards will be presented at 10 p.m. Conclusion of the show is at 11 o'clock this evening. Tro phies will be awarded for the best hot-rod, best upholstery job, best engineering, and for the skeepstakes winner. A special award will be made for the outstanding "local" car, those entries within a 75 mile radius of Medford. Manager Batinich stated that every entrant will receive a trophy, an award or a plague. Judge will be making their Referees Meet At Grants Pass Monday Night Rogue ' Valley Basketball association will hold a regu lar meeting on Monday evening. This session will be at Grants Pass Senior High school. Time of meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Referee assignments from Jan. 23 through Feb. 14 will be given. Officials . must attend the meeting to receive assignments. Dean's short jumper, . Peek's long push and Dean's shot from the key slot made it 37 to 11. Medford put in 14 free shots and just three field goals in the last period while GP col lected two from the field and 11 from the gift stripe. The Cavemen were pressing in the last quarter in their last ditch bid to keep their unblemished league record alive but Med ford took a 44 to 28 advan tage, saw it slip to 44 to 34 with five minutes to go, then widened the spread again af ter a 46 to 36 gap. The Black Tornado hit .349 average from the field and .676 from the foul strip. Grants Pass fired .240 and .606, . respectively. An unsteady ball club through most of its games this season, . Medford had a few ragged moments, Friday night, but showed general consistency against the Cave men. Violations, faulty passes and lost balls proved costly to the Grants Pass crew. . The Tornado topped the re bounding against the rugged Cavemen 40 to 30. Medford scored a three game sweep at Grants ' Pass, winning . the . junior varsity mix 49 to 35 and the sopho more. tussle 41 to 40. - The Tornado payvees led 23 to 16 at the half of the ruckus. This is the first such show that has been held in the Rogue River valley. Many of the entries hail from points south to the Bay area and north to Portland. Movies 'of famous racing events are scheduled for sev eral showings during the day and from the indication of the crowd in one of yester day's events they are very popular with the crowds. A concession stand operat ed by members of SOTA wil be in operation during ' the day. A special attraction today will have Gary Beck, Rose- burg, pin-striping a 1957 Mer cury. . , Clinic For Men Volleyballers Billed at YMCA A volleyball clinic will be held at the Young ' Men's Christian association on Mon day, Jan. 19, at 7:30 pjn The clinic is for all men in terested in volleyball. It will be conducted by Esper Richey, Eugene. He is a regional official for the U.S Volleyball association, and has been putting on clinics all over the northwest. Medford YMCA team will be host to the Eusene and to Ashland teams. Most of the fundamentals and skills of some coaching and officiat volleyball will be shown plus coaching and officiating tech niques. Also a lot of time will be used playing volleyball. All men interested are in vited whether YMCA mem bers or not. Central Point won the seventh grade mix 30 to 16. Grizzly frosh had 10 to 7, 27 to 16 and 34 to 22 quarter spreads. Stults had 11 mark ers for the winners and John Champ 10 for Crater. Vera Swan put in 14 for Central Point seventh. Bend's Lava Crater High Bend - Bend's Lava Bears, shooting hot and cracking Comet defense for many close in buckets, downed Crater high 99 to 51 Friday night in a non-league basketball game here. Mike King of Crater was high point man with 21. Tom Riley topped Bend with 16. Scores by periods, all with Bend leading were 24 to 11, 44 to 21 and 66 to 32. Crater won 51 to 48 in a junior varsity match. Grade Varsities Open Hoop Slate Oak Grove beat Wilson 28 to 6 and- Hoover tripped Lin colon 29 to 23 , Friday as American league action open ed in Medford city grade school varsity basketball. In the National league Jef ferson licked Jackson 26 to 8 and Roosevelt -bounced Washington 22 to 16. Cavemen Only Rated Club Beaten United Press International Only one of the top ten ranked prep basketball teams in the state was defeated on Friday night-and it fell to another ranked team. Ninth-ranked Grants Pass dropped a 57-41 decision tq seventh ranked Medford. : Undefeated Bend, No. 6, turned in the most impressive score. The Lava Bears shelled Crater, 99-51. ' Astoria, No. 2, wasn't far behind as the Fishermen had little trouble in disposing of Clackamas, 73-38. Grant Wins 22nd First ranked Grant of Port land topped Benson 58-43 for its ; 22nd consecutive win in the Portland Interscholastic league. That ties a mark set by Franklin a few years ago. Third ranked North Salem had little trouble in getting by cross-town rival South Sa lem, 47-38. Franklin of Portland, Nol 4, and Beaverton, tied for tenth, had their hands full before turning in wins. Frank lin beat Madison by only three points, 47-44, and Bea verton edged Gresham 57-55.' Klamath Falls, ranked sixth, beat Ashland, 54-38; Jefferson, No. 8, toppled Lin coln, 61-43; and Pendleton, tied for tenth, knocked off La Grande, 62-50. McLoughlin Victor Over South GP McLoughlin Junior high ninth graders got off to a torrid start and played tre mendous defense Friday to defeat their South Grants Pass basketball counterparts 49 to 30. r The Bulldogs eight nipped its South GP rival 28 to 27 on Frank Van Pelt's last sec ond foul shots and McLough lin took the seventh grade mix 32 to 16. McLoughlin's ninth put in 80 per cent of its first quart er shots for a 19 to 9 lead against the South Grants Pass zone. The Bulldogs still did well when the Climate town boys went to . man-to-man. They led 33 to 16 at the half and had a .552 gunning mark from the field. Third quarter count was' 43 to 23. Bob Schroeder scored 15 points and turned in outstand ing defense for the Bulldogs and George Clearwater got 14 points. Ted McSwan totalled 11 for South Grants Pass. . McLoughlin had a .407 shooting average for the full game. Van Pelt got his two free shots in the eighth grade game with two seconds to go and the Medford team behind 26 to 27 at the time. McLough lin was ahead at the quarter 4 to 0. South had 12 to 10 half and 21 to 19 three quart er edges. Shepherd scored 13 for Grants Pass and Ed Bow man and Dick Deffley nine for Mac. Southern Oregon college junior varsity assumed lone hold on first place in the Southern Oregon Independent Basketball league on Friday by defeating Christie's Silver Dollar of Grants Pass 45 to 27 here. It was the fifth win against Ladies Launch League Rivalry In Volleyball Rogue Valley, Central Point, Gold Hill and YMCA Y'ettes won opening round matches last week in the round robin league sponsored by the YMCA Women's Vol leyball club. The eight clubs in the cir cuit will play each Thursday for seven weeks and a single elimination tournament will follow. There will be awards for first and second places. Sportsmanship awards will be given on the basis of ref erees' decisions. In the matches last week Rogue Valley won from Eagle Point 15-6, 15-8 and 15-3, Cen tral Point beat the YMCA Y'Nots 15-10, 15-11, Gold Hill turned back Griffin Creek 15-9, 9-15, 15-9 and the Yettes trimmed Crater 15-1, 15-10 and 15-7. Mat Matches Called Off Grants Pass - Matchmaker Elton Owen has announced that he has been forced to call off the wrestling card which had been scheduled for the Josephine county fairgrounds on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Dick Puhl's nine points for SOC was high for both teams. Don Reese topped Grants Pass with eight. Glen Peterson with eight points in the first half paced SOC to a 24 to 14 midway lead. Hawkinson Tire turned a close game into a rout by switching from zone to man-to-man defense in the second half. First canto score in the game was 13-all. The Tiremen led just 30 to 29 at the half then broke away to 54 to 42 in the third quarter. Jim Irwin, who had 26 points for the night, hit well for Butte Falls in the first half as his teammates set him up for shots against the Med ford zone. Darwin Moore and Pat Conley also bucketed dur ing the half to keep the BF gang in the running. The man-to-man put a stop to the Butte Falls threat. Spurred by Atkins, Ausland, Lewellyn and Davis, the Cave kids had period spreads of 11 to 6, 25 to 23 and 42 to 33. Scott Eaton played a great game for Hedrick, scoring 20 points and holding Ausland to three field buckets. Charles Allen picked off 10 rebounds for the Medford school and did a good job defensively against GP's Davis. Rennie Vowell , was another Hornet defensive stalwart. Scores 15 The Hornets, themselves, hit from the field at 35 per cent rate and , each made around 70 per cent of their free shots. Atkins had 15 markers for the Grants Pass club. Hedrick won the eighth grade game 35 to 32 by com ing from behind in the fourth quarter. The Hornets were in front 4 to 2 at the first intermission but trailed 13 to 7 at the middle one and 27 to 24 at the third rest. Hedrick seventh and eighth will vie at Phoenix on Tues day.
