Some times the doc tor can get the story that the woman lost all appe tite the day her beau left her or her husband died, or when some Dr. Alvarea thing else happened to make her feel hopeless and utterly discouraged. Occasionally, one hears that the woman went on a reduction diet and then didn't seem to be able to stop. Doctors call this disease anorexia nervosa, Which means only a nervous loss of appetite. Curiously, the wom an seldom - shows much con cern over her serious situa tion; she seldom complains to a physician, and usually he sees her only when some rela tive brings her in. In some cases, the woman will go on eating very little and regur gitating most of that - until she peters out and dies. A few of the patients can be en couraged to eat enough so that they will fatten up and go back to work. Some, after getting well, will later slump, and again become emaciated. Tub Feeding Best According to Dr. Eirian Wil liams, who wrote recently in the British Medical Journal, the best method of treatment is feeding with a stomach tube, and certainly this is a logical way of attacking the problem, especially at the start. A point that I fear has been missed by most of the persons who have described the disease is that all, or all but a few, of the patients are somewhat psychotic. Many whom I have seen were un recognized schizophrenics; they were queer, odd, poorly adjusted women who did not have the nervous strength to stand up to the buffets of life. In one series of cases I stud ied, and in another series studied by some psychiatrists, all of the women had insanity in the family, and had ap parently inherited some of the family disease. The x fact that sometimes, after having been fattened up, these women revert to their former state shows that their essential and basic nervous instability was not changed by the treatment. For in stance; I remember a young woman patient of mine who promptly recovered and fattened up when the resident physician at the hospital asked her to marry him. But a few years later she went back to starving herself. In another case I got the young woman to start eating again, just by talking over with her her unhappy love affairs. She left the hospital; she fattened up a bit without any help from me, and went back to her good position as a secre tary, but she remained a bunch of nerves. The case I was most happy about was that of a sweet lovely girl who was brought to me in an emaciated state. I found that she had been all right until her psychotic and highly selfish mother had de manded that she give up her job and her beau in Philadel phia to come back home to Chicago. The mother insisted that she was dying and that the girl devote herself to her. When I read the riot act to the girl's father, he set her free. She promptly, then, be gan to eat; she soon married her beau, and for years after ward, at each Christmas time I would get a letter saying she was well and happy. I have seen many cases in which the increase in the number of the red cells in the blood was hardly worth fuss ing about. Also, I don't know where the man has been liv ing. If he has been living at the Cerro de Pasco mine, 15,- 000 feet up in the Andes of Peru, he ought to have a poly cythemia, in order to make up for the rarity of the oxy gen in that atmosphere. Oc casionally, a severe poly cythemia is due to some ab normality in the blood-forming organs, and then it should be treated by an expert in blood diseases, perhaps with a radio - active isotope. For tunately, the disease is rare; 1 do not see a case in 10 years. Action of Alcohol On The Stomach A woman tells me that she and her husband have violent arguments as to whether he should take two or three drinks before dinner. She fears this amount of alcohol will injure the lining of his stomach. If he takes his whiskey straight or "on the rocks" I suppose it could tem porarily irritate the lining of his stomach, but I doubt if this would do him any per manent harm. If he will take his whiskey diluted in the form of a highball, he should n't have any trouble. If he drinks beer or wine, again,' I can't imagine how he can hurt his stomach. Some physicians think that alcohol is bad for people with ulcers while oth ers do not. I have no strong views on the subject. I have never cared for theory. What I like are facts of observation, and these often are hard to get on a large series of per sons. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail. The meeting was ..called to order by Harlin Stinson. Caro lyn Hackney gave the 4-H pledge. The secretary, Jerry Rodgers, called roll. Dale West gave a report on the Christmas party. Phyllis Perry gave a report on the skating party. Mr. Krambeal read the con stitution and by-laws of 'the 4-H. A motion was made and seconded that we pass the con stitution and by-laws. We nominated, song leader and game and recreation commit tee. Regina Krambeal was elected song leader and Bill Morgan game leader. Mr. Dunn talked about the goals and also about the fourth step in the saddle horse project. He also asked every one what each wanted to work most on during the com ing year. Then we sang some songs.
