Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins Here are Details on The Gruesome Squid It doesn't seem possible that anything could look as bad as an octopus, yet the squid does; he has 10 arms instead of eight, and the rest of him is just as ridiculous. What makes him so much more gruesome is the fact that this character can, if he's lucky, grow to be 50 feet long. He's the largest living invertebrate on the face of the earth. Imagine, being 50 feet long and having no back bone. He has intrigued the imagi nation of fiction writers to the point where the reading pub lic is well acquainted with this ferocious looking crea ture. Have a Beak The squids have a beak, something like that of a par rot, and powerful jaws that can tear and rip their prey into shreds. The long "arms" are equipped with alternate rows of suction1 disks, ar ranged along the underside. These cups or "disks" are under direct muscular control of the animal and are capable of terrific suction. Being dwellers of the dark, oceanic depths, many of the squids have the 'power of emitting light, a pale green ish glow which .makes it pos sible for the creature to find its way in the darkness that is always present at great depths. They also have the ability to change their body eolor to match their surround ings; what good this does at dark depths, has never been established. These waves of color sweep over the soft body, following one another with flowing rapidity; red, blue, yellow, and brown, as the occasion dictates. Sepia From the ink ; sac of one species of squid a fluid known as sepia is extracted. This ma terial is the "India ink" of commerce When alarmed, or excited, the squid, like . the octopus, ejects this brown fluid into the water, and prob ably hides until danger is past. To the family of squids also belongs the cuttlefish, whose backbone becomes a necessary piece' of equipment for a canary bird's cage; called cuttlebone. The giant squid who lives alone at the bottom of the sea and apparently likes it, is known to be one of the fastest animals in the ocean. He is also exceedingly alert, and disgustingly active. E. Merkel, Jackson county public health officer; Orre Moore, senior sanitarian; Cliff Cordy, county agent; Miss Mary Pat Lucy, home extension agent; and Larry Tweedy, boy's councelor. The, participants will be available for individual meet ing and discussion. with the public following the program. The invocation will be given by Mrs. C. W. Higinbotham. V. r li Key j returned recently from a two weeks trip to Sacramento, Calif. The irkey's son, Lary, returned Jan. 8 to California where he is employed. Miss D'Anne Clark, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. John Clark, left last week for the University of Oregon where she recently enrolled as a student. Miss Clark has been attending Southern Oregon college. Miss Clark's room mate at the school is also a Central Point girl, Miss Alice Turner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Turner. Word was received here that Mrs. Edward Knapp of Kenosha, Wis., died Jan. 12. Mrs. Knapp was the mother of Ed Knapp, physical edu cation director at Crater High school. The Crater Grandmothers club will meet Monday, Jan. 19, at the home of Mrs. C. L. Morehouse on Beal lane. Each member is reminded to take an object for the "silent auc tion" which will take place after the dessert luncheon. Lyle Paull, city recorder, announced that within the next few days the Central Point city council will meet with the Jacksonville library board to discuss county li brary problems. Cave Junction Groups Tell Sunday Speakers Cave Junction Rex von Krohn, lay reader of St. Luke's church, Grants Pass, will conduct the services at St. Mathias Episcopal church Sunday. A guest will be Thomas Murdock, student of the Epis copalian ministry. Murdock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Murdock former residents of the valley and now living in Klamath Falls, is a grandson of Roy Wells. "The Man Who Tried to Buy God's Favor" is the topic of the second in a series of sermons' on Old Testament characters which will be giv en by the Rev. Harold Mackey Sunday at the Immanuel Methodist church. Morse Introduces Resolution for Veterans' Group Washington Sen. Wayne Morse (D.Ore.) has introduced a resolution to establish a standing legislative commit tee on veterans' affairs in the Senate. "There is nothing new or daring about this resolution," Morse said. "It was actually recommended to .the Senate in 1946 by the LaFollette Monroney Committee which made so many outstanding recommendations on the reor ganization of Congress. . .As we know, the House of Repre sentatives accepted and car ried out that recommenda tion; the Senate did not. . ." Morse deplored the present practice of dividing legisla tion affecting veterans and their families among several Senate committees, all having many other legislative duties. Not Doing Duly "When so many House passed veterans bills die in the Senate without evejn reaching the floor, we simply are not doing our duty to those citizens who have served in the Nation's armed forces . . ."In offering this Resolu tion, I sincerely hope it will receive the. early considera tion, of the Rules Committee."
