Grants Pass hosts Medford this evening and Klamath Falls on Saturday night. Med f ord's meeting will be its first of the season with the Cave men. GP won out by 11 points over Klamath in a conference opener at Klamath Falls. The Cavemen go into to night's action unbeaten in three loop scrambles while Medford and Klamath sport 2-1 marks in the circuit. KF's Pelicans vie at Ashland to night and are favored to take HAIDER OPPOSES MOUNTIES Richard (Hughie) Smith is 3io. 3 forward for the Southern Oregon college basketball 'team. He'll likely see a good bit of action against the Eastern .Oregon Mountaineers in Oregon Collegiate conference scuf fles tonight and Saturday night at the SOC court in Ashland. .Smith, 6-3 junior from Reedsport, is on the Raider varsity "after two years of jayvee ball. He is married and has one bhild. Raider JV players meet Grants Pass tonight and Haw 'kinson Tire of Medford in Preliminaries. The curtain raisers are set for 6:30 pjn. HOCKEY NATIONAL LEAGUE United Press International Now that the Boston Bruins iave snapped a four-game win less streak, the Detroit Red Wings can only hope that 'their luck will change next. The Bruins, backed up by the steady netminding of Don Simmons, posted a 3-0 vic tory over Detroit Thursday night to extend the Red Wings winless famine to seven games. It was the only scheduled National Hockey league game and the Bruins' victory enabled them to tie Detroit for fourth place. , AMERICAN LEAGUE United Press International The Hershey Bears appear to be the team to beat in the American H o c k ey league stretch drive following their convincing 5-1 victory over an All-Star squad selected from the five other teams. The Bears, currently - tied for second place in the stand ings just one point shy of league-leading Buffalo, scored in each period Thursday night in the fifth annual All-Star contest played at Hershey. PLAYERS INELIGIBLE Portland (DPD The Ore gon School Activties Associa tion Thursday said a non residence clause has made a Newport high school basket ball player ineligible. The player, Mike Wertin, had played in four games and any wins over that period must be forfeited, the OSAA said. Newport's ineligibility will not affect its league campaign or chances for a state tourney berth. ORIOLES HIRE OWEN Baltimore Md. - (UPD - The Baltimore Orioles have hired former major league catcher Mickey Owen as a scout. Owen, 41, will seek" Balti more talent in a midwest area that includes, Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska , Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. AF Coach Likes Goal Post Rule Portland - (UPD - Football Coach Ben Martin of the Air Force academy said today lengthening the- goal post crossbars is a good idea. Martin, here to attend a dinner meeting tonight to meet local prep coaches and athletes, added that the wider posts would have helped the Falcons in their Cotton Bowl game against Texas Christian. The Air Force missed three field goal tries in the score less tie. Martin said Air Force coaches have studied pictures of football games played by Terry Baker, ambidextrous Jefferson high all-around athlete. Baker will not be able to attend the dinner meeting because he plays in a basketball game tonight. Hoop Spotlight on Grants Tornado Meets Cavemen First Christian Quintets Take Three Contests First Christian added two victories last night in the YMCA senior church basket ball league. The quint played a two-min ute overtime to nose Zion Lutheran 41 to 39 in a "con tinued" tussle then ninDed the Methodists 25 to 24. First Bap tist trounced Phoenix Presby terian 41 to 10. ' First Christian - and Zion had tied last week and post poned the extra session be cause of the late hour. Manley had nine points for Christian and T h o m p son seven for Methodist last night while E. Paterson put in 20 for the Baptists. Whitman had 14 for Christian in the com pleted fray and Shaw 13 for the Lutherans. First Baptist trimmed Pres byterian 26 to 11 and First Christian bounced St Mark's Episcopal 42 to 18 last night in junior league play. Garry Olson had all of the Baptist tallies. Jim Osborn scored 12 for Christian and John Barker 10 for St. Mark's. Methodist and Zion Luthe ran senior teams are to play an exhibition at 2:45 p.m. Sat urday at the YMCA. the Grizzlies. Other conference battles of the week end will have Crater at Ashland on Saturday. Crater is at Bend for a non-leaguer this evening. Almost Must While the SO conference season is not too far under way and a lot of games lie ahead, victory for Medford is almost a must tonight to keep in contention for the di adem. Triumphs by Grants Pass over both the Black Tor nado and Pelicans would give the Cavemen a fat lead in the circuit. On the basis of conference play so far, Grants Pass will h at least a slight favorite over the Black Tornado this evening. The Cavemen have this rating on the basis of their 62 to 51 win over Klam ath and Klamath's 70 to 61 margin over Medford. GP also has a 64 to 37 verdict over Ashland which the Tornado defeated 55 to 39. However, Medford tipped Crater by a slightly wider margin than did the Cavemen. Tornado gap was 60 to 37 over the Comets while GP was victor 55 to 34. Moore Seeking Cooper Tussle : New York (DPD Light heavyweight champion Archie Moore, recipient of the Ed ward J. Neil Trophy for "Fighter of the Year," took a verbal punch at England's Henry Cooper today and of fered him $150,000 for a fight in London or anywhere. Dapper Archie, 42 or 45, said "I'm dead serious about this. Jack Kearns and I will definitely give Cooper a guar antee of a hundred and fifty grand if he'll fight me. It'll be the first big step in my campaign for another shot at the heavyweight title." The Lions, who hadn't known many happy days last season, were rolling out the red car pet for their number one draft choice, Nick Pietrosante of Notre Dame. "There hasn't been this much excitement around here since Hopalong Cassady first signed," said a secretary. Its rare for a professional team to call a news confer ence when a rookie is siened Usually that's handled bv i form news release. But to the Lions, Pietrosante is the rookie. Although slowed down bv a bruised rib and charley horse last season Pietrosante who gained 556 yards in 117 carries for a 4.8 average was named . the most valuable player of the East-West Shrine Game and starred in the Hula Bowl against a team of pro fessionals. Pietrosante said he signed a one-year contract but the terms were not disclosed. He said he had decided on play ing American football even before the draft. Klamath Falls is rated above Grants Pass in the polls despite the loss to the Cave men. Grizzlies Hop Crater holds a S3 to 37 nod over Ashland but the Grizzlies are hoping that the familiar surroundings of their home court will be a boost toward their first victory of the sea son. Improvement evident i n practice this week has bol stered Tornado spirits for its trip to Grants Pass. This im provement has been so gen eral that Coach Frank Roe landt has been at a loss to name a starting five. He said this morning that the opening line-up will be named from among eight men, Jerry An derson, Lowell Dean, Ken Durke, John Harvey, Jerry Shults, George Koch, Booth Deakins and Don Peek. Pete Rasmussen has rehurt the back which has kept him out of action and Coach Roe- landt said that his presence with the squad tonight is doubtful. The rehurt occurred off the practice Court. Dick Allen, missing a couple of Pass; Tonight days because of an ear infec tion, returned to the squad yesterday. Caveman Starters Coach Gordon Prehm may have Johnnie Olson, John Fox, Jerry Putnam, Rex Ben ner and Dick Hayes in the Caveman starting five. GP has capable reserves in Jim Purkett, Rick Sabin, Mike Leonard and Dave Mannan, Marv Chandler, Larry Jans sen and Ron Erickson. For the Klamath Falls and Crater games, Coach Earl Iba is expected to pick Ashland starters from among Clark Smith, Jim Bjork, Bob John son, Gerald Allen, JDoug For rest, Don Taylor and Steve Gray. Possible opening men for Klamath are Bob Lewis, Jim Hall, Bob Peterson, Don DeLap and Dean Dunson. Crater's opening whistle five against Ashland depends on the Bend performance to night, coach Don Anielak said. He'll likely pick from among Bill and Tom White, Dennis Pfaff, Jim Eldred, John Burns, Chuck Turner, Loyal Higinbotham and Mike Kins. UNE Tom Pigott Will Quit Portland -(CPD Tom Pigott, secretary-treasurer of the Ore gon School Activities Associa tion since 1942, resigned Thursday effective March 1, 1960. A. Oden Hawes was named as successor. He has been as sistant secretary since 1948. Miss Faulk of Thomasville, Ga., and Miss Cornelius, from Lake Worth, Fla., topped Thursday's first round shoot ing with even par 72's. The Wildcats only loss this season came at the ex pense of St. Joseph's, Pa., after they had won their first eight games.
