SOC Student Body Head
Leads Budget Conference
Ashland - Southern Oregon
college student body presiden.
Richard Clark, Medford, head
ed a delegation to the Ore
gon Federation of College
Leaders conference at Cor-
vallis Jan 10 to discuss pos
sible effects of the proposed
cut by former Gov. Robert D.
Holmes in the state higher
education budget.
Clark, 'who was accompan
ied by Joe Ferguson, Spring
field, student body treasurer,
and Jim Boyd, Medford, who
served as the college press
representative, is president of
the OFCL.
Student leader reactions to
the three major problems dis
cussed were:
Faculty Salaries
(1) Faculty salaries must be
kept on a competitive level
with other western schools.
"Bud" Titus, University of
Oregon student body presi
dent, reported that state fac
ulty salaries are in the mid
dle bracket in this respect,
but unless salaries are in
creased, Oregon colleges will
cease to attract and retain
top-caliber professors.
(2) Building programs will
be, retarded by budget cuts.
Larry McKennon, student
body president of Oregon
State college, stated, "Any
cut here means a cut in educa
tion facilities. We want the
students to get the best pos
sible education. Any cutback
is a setback in providing this
education."
(3) A budget cut will prob
ably cause an increase in tui
tion fees. Clark quoted a sur
vey of the University of Wis
consin which pointed out that
46 per cent of "eligible grad
uating high school seniors do
not attend colleges because of
their unwillingness to go into
debt.
Lists Action
Clark listed the action
taken by the group: A letter
is to be sent to Governor
Mark Hatfied expressing the
concern of the group over the
proposed budget cut; the sup
port of the OFCL, composed
of student leaders from all
the etate system schools plus
Lewis and Clark college,
Linfield college, Pacific uni
versity, and Willamette uni
versity, was pledged; and in
formational campaigns will be
conducted on each campus
through it student govern
ment, campus newspapers,
and other publications.
Other participants included
Dean DeChaine, student body
president, Portland State;
Harley Smith, Oregon State
representative; and Harold
Moore, student body presi
dent, Eastern Oregon college.
