Aivare really symp. tcm of a depression which, as a little questioning shows, followed the birth of a child. Sometimes I get suspicious the minute the woman in my office starts to break down and cry. Then I send for her husband or her mother, and learn that she has been badly depressed ever since her child was born. I am ashamed to say that since none of us older doctors were ever shown such cases when we were at college, in nine out of 10 cases we fail to make the correct diagnosis when the woman comes in. Usually she is put through the so-called "diagnostic mill" and whatever is found is sup posed to be her trouble. For instance, a year ago I saw a young woman in a typical de pression which had, followed the birth of her second baby, Because most of her complaint was of a pain in the chest, she was taken to a young heart specialist." When he, after much study of her, thought he had heard a slight murmur and had found slight changes in her electrocardio gram, he started: treating her for heart disease. Taken To 'Specialist' When this didn't do any good, and when she began to complain of pain in - her stomach, she was taken to a "stomach specialist" who promptly found that she had a very small diaphragmatic or hiatus hernia (in the midriff), she had almost no acid in her stomach, and she had a little spasm in her duodenum (the first four inches of bowel out side her stomach). According ly, the stomach specialist started treating these three supposed diseases. The only Ike Nominates New Administrator Washington -:' (UPD .- Presi dent Eisenhower has nomi nated Norman P.- Mason as the new housing and home finance administrator. Mason, whose home is Chelmsford, .Mass., is now commissioner of federal hous ing. He was named to succeed Albert M. Cole whose resigna tion was accepted Tuesday by the President. Cole, 57, told Eisenhower he was stepping down for per sonal reasons. The Reynolds Metals Co. later announced he would become vice presi dent of the Reynolds Alumi num Service Corp., and help develop programs for using aluminum in building construction. trouble was that she didn't get any better. Then the girl was taken to another physi cian, a wise old general prac titioner who soon said, "Why that is a typical post-partum depression,"' and told her to go to a psychiatrist for a few electroshock treatments. This, however,, so outraged the pa tierrt (she wasn't going to have her mother-in-law saying that her son had married a "queer one") that she would have nothing more to do with "such a stupid doctor." She went to another doc tor who said she was slightly anemic, and started giving her, several times a week, "shots" of B12. With these, for a while she thought she was better. But later, when she got so depressed she could not do any housework and could not take much care of her children,- she gave in and had her shock treatments. After four of them, she was her old merry and sensible self again, and it was a joy to see her "come back.) Excess of Acid In The System Many people ask me what to do for "an excess of acid in the system," and I'm sure I don't know. One thing I am certain of and that is that "excess of acid in the sys tem" is a folk idea and not a medical one. If a man's blood were to turn the least bit acid for even a few seconds, he'd be dead as a door nail. Most of the chemical processes in his body would stop instantly. I imagine that what my cor respondents felt was heart burn. Actually, heartburn is due purely to the normal acid of the stomach regurgitating into an irritable and over sensitive gullet. Even in well people the acid keeps regurgi tating into the gullet, but for some reason or other it isn't felt. Then, suddenly, perhaps for several days it is ielt. The best treatment is to take half a teaspoon of sodium bicar bonate and put it in half . a glass of water, mix it up and drink that. When one washes the gastric acid out of one's gullet, that usually is the end of the burning. There are a few people who think their system is acid because their mouth tastes a bit sour. I don't know why that is. Certain makers of drugs cash in on this idea by em phasizing the slogan, "When you have a cold, alkalize." Actually, one cannot make one's blood more alkaline, even if one takes large amounts of sodium bicarbon ate. Keloids A woman writes in great distress because, after having had a cyst cut out of her neck, the scar has raised up so that it looks almost like a little finger placed on top of her skin. She got somebody to cut it out and another keloid came back. She says that one of her children has the same difficulty. When his appendix was removed, he got a keloid in the scar. All I can tell the woman to do is to go to an excellent skin specialist who may be able to help, perhaps by in jecting a certain drug into the keloid or by using some form of radiation. Treatment is not easy and it is not always satisfactory.
