m 12 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Tuesday, January 13, 1959 GOP Fight Shaping Over Chairmanship Of Campagin Group Washington -CT- A new fight between Republican senators was brewing today with the chairmanship of the Senate GOP campaign com mittee at stake. The issue was whether Sen. Barry Goldwater (Ariz.), should be named to the post in view of his battle with or ganized labor over the role of unions in politics. It was understood that a conservative group was back ing Goldwater for the job. Some liberals, on the other hand, considered the Arizona senator unacceptable. Saltonstall in Middle Caught in the middle of the dispute was Sen. Leverett Saltonstall (Mass.), chairman of the Republican conference who makes the appointment, subject to the approval of the GOP senators. Saltonstall was reported to feel that the selection of Gold- water would be an affront to labor and to liberal senators who will be seeking reelection in 1960. The Massachusetts senator, whose term also expires next year, said that he had not yet made up his mind, however, and would consult with . all senators up for reelection be fore making a choice. The normal practice is for the conference chairman to get an agreement on a cam paign chairman from all sen ators who will be candidates in the next election. This appears impossible in the present case. At least two liberals are known to have Authorities Want Released Prisoner San Jose, Calif.-flTPD-Rosa-rio Corela, 29, was released from Santa Clara county jail Monday -but the authorities would like him back. Corella signed release pa pers made out for Rafael Ca rillo, 35, donned Carillo's clothes, took possession of his wallet and money and walked out. Corella still had six months to serve. Carillo was released a few minutes later-but he turned down the two cents in Corel la's envelope. Jailer William Risko said the mistake happened because of a similarity in names, and besides, "they look alike." Sen. Clifford P. Chase (N.J.) said he did not know what but added: "If his decision is against appointing Senator Goldwater-much as I admire Goldwater-it would be a wise one." Goldwater, informed of Sal tonstall's reported position, promised to fight for the job if he were being ruled out on the theory that his ' appoint ment would offend "labor bosses." Sen. Thomas H. Kuchel, (Calif.), was said to hold hope that GOP leaders could thrash out the problem themselves and avoid a bitter battle when the Republican confer ence meets later this week.
