A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, January 12, 1939 Teamster Leader, Lawyer Differ In Testimony Tacoma -JUPD A Teamsters Union attorney Friday gave testimony in the Dave Beck income tax evasion trial that was in direct conflict with what Frank Brewster said on the witness stand Wednesday. Samuel B. Bassett, who has been employed by the Team sters for about 17 years, said he had no hand in preparing an accord and satisfaction agreement by which Beck "re paid" the Teamsters union. Wednesday, Brewster, for mer president of the Western Conference of Teamsters and current president of Joint Council of Teamsters 28, tes tified that Bassett had hand led all the negotiations in con nection with the agreement. Bassett, who had been vague about almost every thing else in his testimony, was positive about his agree ment. Questioned by Judge George H. Boldt, Bassett said he was "just a messenger boy" in the deal. He said that Seattle at torney George Kashlein had prepared the document and that he, Bassett, had corrected it for minor errors and had turned it over to Brewster, fand now is the time forall Two Area Attorneys Named io Service Salem-For the fourth reg ular legislative session, the Oregon State bar legal assis- ,nce committee has opened offices in the capitol building to make technical legal ser vices available to the law makers. The Bar's public service program extends a helping hand to the busy legislators by providing legal advice, re search and similar responsi bilities, George L. Hibbard, Oregon City, president of the state organization, explained. The program does not con flict with the functions of legislative counsel and those of attorney but are supple mental, Hibbard said. "The impartiality and the need for the legal assistance committee has been well es tablished in the past three legislative sessions," Hibbard said. "The Oregon State Bar is proud of this record of ser ving the legislators and the people of the state." Ben T. Lombard, Ashland and Manville H. Heisel, Med ford, were among the 20 at torneys in the state chosen to represent the bar in Salem. The committee workers spend two weeks each at the capi tal. Lombard will serve Feb. 2 to 13, and Heisel will serve from April 13 to April 24. LUBRICATING RR WHEELS Philadelphia-IUPD-The Read Ing railroad says the use of a new "dry" lubricant on the wheels of locomotives will provide "more efficient, more economical, and safer opera tion of trains. The Reading says it has reduced the wear and tear on its curved rails by 35 per cent through the use of a chemical preparation called molybdenum disulfide applied by a solid lubricating stick attached to the wheel flanges of locomotives. The Reading began testing the wear on curved tracks in 1954. It has made experiments on a 35-mile stretch of track with 150 curves. The total volume of freight handled in German seaports in 1957 was 59 million tons, compared with 58,800,000 in 1956. 4-H CLUB NEWS Central Point Pig Club The Central Point Pig club held its December meeting at Carol Foote's home on Scenic ave. We had a short business meeting with a Christmas party following. We had a gift exchange and played games Refreshments were served by Carol Foote. Our next meet ing will be Jan. 26 at a place to be announced later. Judy Frink, Reporter. 4-H Westside Hayburners The Westside Hayburners 4-H Horse club held its ride Tuesday, Dec. 30. Four mem bers and a visitor completed the ride. They were Marilyn Brewald, Penny Sampert, Lin da Gibson, Hether Rhodey and Linda Knips. The ride was cold and foggy but everyone enjoyed it. Eve ryone met in the Griffin Creek district Tuesday morn ing and rode up to Sterling Creek rd. and back through Jacksonville. During the ride the group had many experiences includ ing meeting Sharon O'Con ners and Jimmy Anderson from the Phoenix Horse club at the aumit of the mountain.
