Prof. A. F. Wileden said church literature and pro grams must be as good as other modern teaching mate rials to fill the needs of the present generation. "In the past, country churches and country schools have grown side by side," he said. "Most schools are chang ing to meet today's needs but I question whether churches have kept pace." Wildeden said that because of the "suburban area trend" and its many social needs, churches have an opportunity of physical and mental health and citizenship training. A i comparison of cigarette smokers with n o n-smokers has shown that the smok ers had sore throats less Delos Smith frequentiy. Scientist W. C. Boake of Western Reserve University, Cleveland, resorted to statis tics to find out if smokers were more likely to catch the common cold and other' res piratory infections causing j-b"'b, horaseness than non-smokers, Medical science generally believes smokers are more SUSCeptible to respiratory in- fections but it has no hard . ,m , Mr CV1UCU" " as Boake pointed out. Studies Only Parents He studied only the par ents, since their smoking (or non-smoking) ways were established and well docu mented in the statistics. He related this to the number of respiratory infections the 118 had had over a five-year pe riod. After acknowledging the weaknesses of his statistical basis, too few numbers and the possibility of "self selec tion," Boake had this to say, in reporting to the New Eng land Journal of Medicine: "Nevertheless, this popula tion has been under continu ous detailed observation and the incidence, distribution and nature of respiratory in fection have varied very little over eight years. The pattern has been similar from year to year.
