Rey nolds, Sacramento, Calif., have announced the engage ment of their daughter, Nancy, to Warren Deakins Jr. The news was revealed when Miss Reynolds "passed the candle," a traditional cere mony at her sorority house at the University of Oregon. Miss Reynolds was graduated from the El Camino High school, where she was a member of tne California Scholarship federation, and is now a sen ior at the university. She is president of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and is a member of Mortar Board, honor society for women. , Mr. Deakins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren W. Deakins, 2008 Westerlund drive, is a gradu ate of the Medford High school and is a senior at Ore gon State college. He is in the United States Air Force ROTC. Wedding plans have not been announced. Health Exercises Topic for Group Mrs. Kenneth Williams and Mrs. Gerald Parsons will con duct the project lesson for the Oak Grove Home Extension unit at their meeting Tuesday, January 13, at 10:30 a.m. The lesson will be on exercises for health and obesity. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. G. S. Munden, 480 Clover lane. Persons wishing to partici pate in the exercises are to wear appropriate clothing. Miss Henry attended Shady Cove schools and Medford School of Beauty. She is em ployed by the Medford school district. Mr. Mills attended Vernonia, Ore., schools and makes his home in Ashland while employed by the Bu reau of Public Roads. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe, receiving his dis charge last year. An April wedding is planned. Sharron Lynn Henry (Hall photo) Medford Woman Flies to Europe Mrs. Joseph Williams, daughter of Mrs. Hazel Wolfe, 322 Benson street, left Med ford Thursday by air for Munich, Germany, where she will join her husband. Mr. Williams is stationed there with the United States Army. Mrs. Williams, who has made her home with her mother, was employed by Bear Creek orchards. Bjorlie, 611 Normal av enue, Ashland, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jean Louise, to Michael I. Morgan, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Morgan. Miss Bjorlie is a senior at Ashland Senior High schooj and Mr. Morgan is a sopho more at Southern Oregon col lege. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Jean Louise Bjorlie Rockefeller Report Distributed The Oregon Education as sociation announced today the distribution of 1,000 cop ies of the "Rockefeller Re port" on education. The fifty page booklet entitled, "The Pursuit of Excellence Ed ucation and the Future of America," is the Special Stud ies Project Report V-Rocke-feller Brothers Fund. Written by an outstanding group of American citizens and chairmaned by Nelson A. Rockefeller, the report points out the "Our schools are over crowded, understaffed, and ill-equipped . . . These pres sures will become more se vere in the years ahead . . . If we are to meet these pres sures, our schools wil need greatly increased public sup port and attention, and much more money. But they also need something besides mon ey; and unsparing re-examination of current practices, patterns of organization and objectives." While the document urges more attention to the gifted and talented pupil, it also holds that we cannot forget any of the pupils enrolled. It argues that there is enough wealth in this nation to pro vide the kind or kinds of ed ucation needed. The report states that "All of the problems of the schools lead us back sooner or later to one basic problem finan cing . . . The nation's need for good education is imme diate; and good education is expensive. That is a fact which the American people have never quite been pre pared to face." This document, prepared by a group of outstanding Americans, is the clearest enunciation to date of the problems facing our schools and what must be done to save the public school sys tem, commented C. W. Posey, executive secretary of the Newly weds j Travel to Mexico Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ham mack will make their home in Yreka following their re turn from a wedding trip to Mexico. The couple were mar ried January 4 in a ceremony at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Bengtson, 103 Oregon Terrace. The Rev. John O. Reynolds, of First Presbyterian church officiated at the double ring rites, held at one o'clock in the afternoon. The bride is the former Mary Vernice Gillilend of Hawthorne apartments, Med ford. Mr. Hammack is a son of Mrs. Anna Hammack of Yreka. Bruno Pellegrini played the piano wedding music. White carnations, greenery and white gardenias decorated the stairway. The wedding was attended by 58 relatives and friends. The bride wore a pink frock fashioned with brocade bod ice and gathered crystalline skirt. Her pearls were a gift of the bridegroom and she car ried gardenias and stephano tis on a white Bible loaned for. the occasion by Mrs. Bengtson. Mr. Bengtson gave the bride in marriage. Mrs. Betty Fichtner attend ed the bride. She wore a pale blue lace frock with blue net hat and carried a nosegay of pink and white carnations. Earl Boling served as best man. John Montgomery light ed the candles. Following the ceremony a reception was held. M r s. James Higinbotham cut the wedding cake and Mrs. Leo Cellura and Miss Pat Higin botham presided at the punch bowls. Mrs. Walter Collins and Miss Carolyn Fichtner poured the coffee and tea. For her traveling attire the bride chose a green lyiit suit with rust and beige accessor ies. The bride, a nurse, has made her home in Medford since 1940. Mr. Hammack served with the United States Air Force and is a forest rang er with the California Divis ion of Forestry in Yreka. Among the out- of- town guests were Mrs. Hammack, mother of the bridegroom; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Betts, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Betts and daughter, Barbara, all of Mon tague, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Don Hume, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Gaulden and son, all Yreka, and Mr. and Mrs. Lar ry Kirton, Chico, Calif. Chapter to Hear Review of Book "Bitier Lemons" by Law rence Durrell will be review ed by Mrs. Ivah D. Murray at the January meeting of Epsi lon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. The meeting will be held a; the home of Mrs. Paul R. Smith, 3412 Madrona lane, Saturday, January 17, at 2 pjn. Mrs. Betty Lou Dunlop will be chairman of the social com mittee. Oregon Education association. The report is being sent to all newspapers and mem bers of the Oregon State Leg islation. Parts of the report should be of help in establishing new patterns for financing educa tion. The report states that state and local tax systems are in some respect archaic be cause of the excessive depen dence upon the real property tax and reluctance .of local and state governments to ex pand their taxing systems for fear of placing their commu nities or states at a competive disadvantage relative to other areas. ' Rites Held In Arizona Cave Junction - Miss Chris tine Duncan and Raymond Le Roy Sparks were married Saturday, December 27, in the home, of the bride's ma ternal grandmother, Mrs. V. T. Grimmett, Somerton, Ariz. The Rev. Clinton Swengle of First Methodist church, Yuma, Ariz., read the ceremony. A reception followed. Joe Hudson, Cave Junction, gave the bride in marriage. She is a daughter of Mrs. Elenora M.' Whitehead, Yuma, and George Duncan, Kerby. The bride's gown was toast colored Chantilly lace over beige taffeta with a chapel length train draping from a chiffon cummerbund. A lace cap, matching the bride's wed ding gown, held in place her candlelight illusion veil. The bridal bouquet was bronze orchids and white button chrysanthemums. Her single strand of pearls with match ing earrings was a gift from the bridegroom. As maid of honor, Miss Vir ginia Lowe, San Diego, wore a trapeze gown of coral chif fon with matching gloves, shoes and tulle headpiece. She carried a white button chry santhemum nosegay. The brides sister, Betty Jean Whitehead, was junior bridesmaid. She wore a street length coral lace dress over taffeta with matching satin slippers and lace mitts. Her tulle headdress and white enrysamnemum nosegay matched those of the maid of honor. M. Sgt. Sherman S. Wicks, Yuma, served as best man. - . For her daughter's wed ding, Mrs. Whitehead chose an admiral blue lace gown over matching taffeta and blue satin shoes. Her corsage was of white orchids. Guests from Illinois Valley attending the event were Mr. and Mrs. Hudson and Roy Hervey. The bride attended the Kerby grade school and was graduated from Illinois Valley High school in 1954. She at tended Mac Murray Women's college in Jacksonville, 111., and Fresno State college. For the past two years she has been employed as a legal sec retary in San Diego. She is a past queen of Bethel 36, Job's Daughters. Mrs. Dolly Dun can, Kerby is the bride's pa ternal grandmother. The bridegroom is stationed at the Naval Training center, San Diego, and the couple is living in that city. John Rossi. Ronald Slater On NBC Program Donald Slater .Jr., youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Slater, 3527 Roberts road, spent the holidays with his parents. He recently complet ed indoctrination training in the U. S. Army at Fort Riley, Kans. During his visit in the val ley the family traveled to San Diego. The older son, Ronald Slater, who is station ed with the Third Marine di vision on Oklinawa, was re turned to the United States by the National Broadcasting company to appear on Truth or Consequences.
