Newspaper Page TextTwo Dances Set At Local YMCA Two dances will be held in the Young Men's Christian association building this week end, according to Herb Par tridge, youth work secretary. A dance for junior high stu dents will be held tonight, from 8:30 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. Miss Nancy Maxson is chair man of the event and Mrs. Evelyn Maxson will serve as adult advisor. This dance will be open only to junior high students. An after the game dance will be held Saturday for high school and college students. Dance activities will get un derway immediately follow ing the Medford Senior High basketball game. Theta Tau Alpha Tri-Hi-Y is sponsoring this event. It is under chair manship of Charlene High land. Anyone may attend the Y dances whether or not they are nembers of the YMCA, Partridge said. HILTS Family Reunion Held By MRS. M. F. CAVIN Hilts - Mr. and Mrs. David Wissenbach and daughter, Bonnie Kay, had Christmas dinner at the home of Mrs. Wissenbach's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett 90Vce m Ashland. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Archie Dixon and chil dren, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Royce and boys, all of Al turas and Leonard Royce, who is with the U.S. Marine Corp in San Francisco. This is the first time Mrs. Wissenbach's family have been together for several years so the holiday served as a reunion time too. Mr. and Mrs. Don Powers and son, David, returned home New Year's day after spending two week's vacation in Long Beach at the home of Mrs. Powers' sister, Mrs. Steve Osiecki, and family. College students home for the Christmas vacation were Wendell Snook from Univer sity of California, Robert Black from Oregon State, Diana Michelon and Johnny Foggiato from Chico State and Terry Tallis from South ern Oregon college. Holiday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney East man and daughter, Paula, were Mrs. Eastman's sister Mrs. Marius De Meyer and husband of Eureka. The De Meyers drove to San Francisco ' for several days vacation, returning to the Eastman home for New Year's and the week end. On Saturday the two fam ilies drove to Medford where they had dinner at Mary's Casa and attended a show in honor of . Mrs. Eastman's birthday. Mr. and Mrs. De Meyer returned to their home on Sunday. He will become an adviser to the House Tax committee when thp 1959 legislature op ens here next Monday. Previously Eymann served in the state legislature and on the House Tax committee. makes her home with the Eastman's, is spending several days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. "Bus" Peery in Yreka. : "The Message of the Bells", a four act play was presented by the members of the Hilts Community Bible church Sunday school classes on the evening of Dec. 23 at the Com munity church. Group singing of familiar carols was held before the program and was followed by a prayer by Pastor John Shaw. David Sage acted as nar rator for the program. I umn Inluv IT! rn At Your Service For the Years Ahead 112 SOUTH RIVERSIDE River Searched For Ken Martins Portland Sheriffs dep uties today began drawing an electronic profile of the river bottom in back of Bonneville dam in an all-out effort to find the missing Ken Martin family of Portland. Ken Martin, his wife Bar bara Jean, and their three daughters, Barbara, Virginia and - Sue, vanished Dec. 7 when they set out to search for Christmas greenery. Multnomah County Sheriff Francis Lambert said also that a secondary search for a missing plane from Yakima, Wash., will be conducted at the same time. Lowell Adamson, Yakima, and his passenger, Eloise Koontz, disappeared last No vember on a flight from Rich land, Wash., to Portland. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers agreed to lower the Columbia river behind the dam. The lowering process be gan Thursday morning and the river will be raised again Sunday. A sonar device, borrowed from a California electronics firm, was being used to graph the muddy bottom ' of the river. It was hoped that an object as large as the Mar tin's station wagon will show up on the graph as a rectan gular object. If such a picture shows up on the sonar screen, divers will be used to check on the picture. Sheriffs deputies from Multnomah, Hod River and Wasco counties in Oregon and Clark, Skamania and Klick itat counties in Washington will join in the search in a boat posse. Roadside vehicles and helicopters were to scan the lowered banks of the riv er in' hopes of spotting the car. idaviis Enter Dave Beck's Trial Tacomai Wash.-flJPD-AUeged affidavits signed as a "favor" to Dave Beck became a factor today in the government's in come tax evasion, case against the former Teamsters Union president. Two witnesses testified Thursday they had signed the affidavits stating they knew of no loss of funds from the Western Conference of Team sters to Beck. The federal . government failed to. get the documents into evidence but U.S. District Judge George H. Boldt com mented that "the subject will be extremely interesting, I'm sure" when the . remaining counts in connection with Beck's case are tried. The government is pressing six of nine counts in which it charges Beck with evading $240,000 in taxes during 1950 through 1953. The two witnesses were members of the Western Con ference of Teamsters Policy committee during the period. One, William Franklin, San Francisco, now secretary treasurer of the WCT, said he signed a paper which he thought to be some type of an affidavit at the insistence of , teamster auditor Fred Verschueren Sr. Franklin said he was told to sign the document as "a favor to Beck." He said he was reluctant to do so and asked to see Beck personally but was told Beck was out of town. The other witness, John Arnand, Los Angeles, now an international organizer, testi fied he signed the document willingly when it was brought to him by Verschueren. Irrigation Districts Elect Board Officers Both Medford and Talent irrigation districts held elec tions for officers recently, it was reported. For the Medford irrigation district board of directors Paul Culbertson was elected president, J. D. Cameron, vice president and Jack Hoffbuhr was named secretary-manager lor another year. MF - Jee-e- - .... i - - - I I 1 Increase Noted In Bank Deposits Deposits at the Medford branch of the U.S. National Bank of Portland totalled $23,201,183 during the past year, according to Allan Per ry, branch manager, today. Total loans and discounts for the local branch stood at $10,429,333 for the same pe riod, he added. Deposits in the state-wide system of the United States National bank of Portland in creased more than $81 million during the past year and now total $829,029,903, according to bank officials. This more than 10 per cent deposit growth was accom panied by a $17 Vi million in crease in loans and discounts which brings the total to $331,479,546 . as of Dec. 31, it was explained. U.S. National also marked up an $85 million increase in resources for the 66. bank ing offices in the state. The total is now $910,694,229 com pared to $825,386,082. at the end of 1957. MAIL TRIBUNE, M.dford-, Oregon, Friday, January , 1?5 B Halibut To Be Launched Today Vallejo, Calif. -UPD- The first nuclear-powered submar ine capable of firing guided missiles was scheduled to be launched at Mare Island Nav al shipyard today. The USS Halibut, at more than 5,000 tons the Navy's sec ond'largest submarine, is the second atomic sub to be built on the West coast. The USS Sargo was launched here Oct. 10, 1957. The Halibut will be able to fire missiles such as the Regu lus I, with a range of more than 530 miles, as well as tor pedoes. She also carries equip ment to enable her to serve as a radar picket ship. The Halibut's power plant was built at Pittsburgh, Pa., while her turbines, gears and condensers were constructed at Sunnyvale, Calif. Her nu clear reactor is similar -to those in the trans-polar eube USS Nautilus and USS Skate. The funnybone, popular name for part of the elbow, is sensitive because the ulnar nerve is unprotected at that point.
