She became outraged at him. I sympathize with both of them. I know that thousands of women, when they start getting fat, insist that the trouble must .be in their glands. They expect a gland specialist to cure them with out any great effort on their part.. Then it is bitterly dis appointing when the doctor says, "No; you show no sign of defective glands; all you have is too good an appetite and a tendency to get fat like your parents." For years, I used to watch fat women come into the Mayo Clinic by the hundreds and thousands. They asked to be sent to the "glands" depart ment where they hoped to be cured with a little thyroid, or Fun and Fashion TELEVISION PROGRAMS Tha following TV broadcast leej fs printed as a' free publie service for tha Mail Tribune's readers and TV viewers. But, not one in a hun dred of these women had any thing wrong with her glands. All of them had a normal basr al metabolic rate, which show ed that their thyroid gland was working well. In - many cases, the fact that the woman had recently given birth to a baby was enough , to . show that her glands of internal se cretion were working very well. In many of these cases, it looks as if the woman's body is a bit too economical, so that it can get along on very little food. Seldom can a stout wom an reduce unless she takes in, each day, less than 1,200 cal ories. If she eats more than this she will gain weight. Thin persons can take in perhaps 2,500 calories a day without gaining a pound. There is a lot about over weight that we doctors do not yet understand as well as we would like to. But one thing is certain, for most fat persons there is only one thing to do, and that is to stay on a low calorie diet for the rest of their days. To try out an 18 day diet or some freakish or quackish diet " is stupid. For people who would like more help in this matter ' my "new booklet on weight control is available for 25 cents and a large, stamped, self-addressed envelope. Address Dr. Alvar ez, Dept. St. Louis Police Seek Sex Slayer St. Louis, Mo. -(LTD- Police today sought a sex sadist in the slaying of a young moth er whose husband gave her a "night off" to attend a sorority party while he baby sat. The body of Mrs. Charles E. Montague, 32, was found in the back seat of her car Wednesday. The car was park ed in front of the home where Mrs. Montague, a former stu dent at Washington University School of Journalism, had at tended the party Tuesday night. Montague, 34, told the au thorities he had dozed off while sitting with their two children, Charles, 10, and Linda, 9, and became alarmed when he awoke at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday and discovered his wife had not returned from the party. A search was organized and Mrs. Montague's mutilaled corpse was found hours later by her brother, Donald Jones. Officials from the coroner's office said Mrs. Montague, a social worker, apparently had been strangled either with a I chain or rope. The slaying occurred while police were investigating an other college-connected mur der, St. Louis' second in less than a month. James Bullock, a night stu dent at St. Louis University, was found shot to death and run over by a car outside the city art museum several weeks ago. Bullock's pretty wife, a kin dergarten teacher, and her former husband have both re fused to take lie detector tests in the case. The fire occurred when hot liquid asphalt was being ap plied to the roof by Mathis and it ignited and set the roof afire. The court said that whether or not the defendant was negligent in overheating and applying the overheated as phalt to the roof was a ques tion of fact to be determined by the jury as was also the question as to whether or not the defendant had taken rea sonable precautions to avoid a fire. Appealing the : case were the Oregon Mutual Fire In surance company, the Nation al Ben Franklin Insurance company, Fireman's Insur ance company and the North western Mutual Fire associa tion.
